Just before halftime of the Ducks game, the Vols were dominating both sides of the line with good play calling and execution. We were up 13-3 when we did the unthinkable, we decided to play it safe on offense. Instead of trying to win the game, we tried not to lose it and we were really lucky that the ducks only scored 10 points on us and tied the game 13-13 going into the locker room. Advantage: Ducks. So much so that the second half was a nightmare waiting to happen because we lost the drive to win and all the momentum.
Fast forward to the gator game and we once again were calling good offensive plays and matching them step for step with good defensive plays and execution when the coaches once again took their eye off the ball. Literally. Fake punt: Game over.
The Vols coaching staff, which I do respect and hope they jell just like our players, must understand that this is SEC football and one cannot let down their guard or play it safe for 60 minutes. They did a GREAT job prepping the team and having the intensity where it needed to be but IMO, the coaching staff let down the players, and after waaaay too many years of Fulmer doing the same, I hope this group of coaches rebounds.

Well, I have hope. I actually heard Dooley say that one was on him. I thought to myself "A Tennessee head coach taking responsibility? I didn't know they DID that!" :)

We actually had a guy in position to make the tackle on the fake punt, he had hands on the runner, but couldn't make the tackle. Dooley did say the fake was the last thing they expected, but all they can do is put the guys in position to make plays. Our boys on field need to sharpen up and learn to tackle for 4 quarters.

Austin Johnson, a guy who just until recently was playing fullback, was the tackler. Knowing that bit of info, I understand how he had trouble bringing down a big guy like [insert name here] who plowed over what seemed like 4 actual defensive players on our team

DD admitted they should have been in "punt safe" instead of return. But great call by Meyer. BTW, that was there longest rush of the afternoon.

No one saw that play coming except Urban. It was just a good call. Great coaches know when to take gambles like that. The momentum was starting to turn in our favor and that one play took it away. Our guys just gotta be sure that doesn't happen again

Great call and poor tackling. Btw, he's not a "rookie" coach.

this is the way i seen it too,the crowd was getting real loud and then booom it got real quiet real fast..but still should have done a better job of tackling, not just on that play but overall...but overall the team did play some what better than the week before...you got to start somewhere...GO VOLS!!!

Great call my foot...if it had failed everyone would be calling him an idiot including you. If AJ makes that tackle, momentum comes to us....do you think a pro coach would have made that call? I don't think so.

Notre Dame lost when MSU pulled a fake field goal this weekend. Does that mean Chip Kelly is a rookie coach?

He was recruited as an line backer where he played in high school and then moved to offense last year.

It's so easy to "blame" the coach. If Johnson makes the tackle, is it still a "rookie" mistake? What about the 4th down which Urbie tried and didn't make? Is that a coaching blunder by Urbie?
Get real--the athletes from Fla are better than the athletes from TN--and there are more of them.

After the UTM game, this board was full of peaple claiming Johnson should start at LB ahead of Reveiz. Now, the board has people saying it's not surprising he missed the tackle since he was a fullback.
I'm not blaming him--it's part of the game, but to say this was a blunder by a rookie coach is just wrong.

I think Johnson is a good player. He caused a fumble in the game that gave us a shot to win. Missed tackles are a part of the game. It was a ballsy call to go for it in that situation. I don't think any coach would have expected it no matter how long he had been coaching. As bad as our special teams are, I can't believe he didn't just pin us deep. We had shown all game our inability to drive the ball the length of the field.

The point is, we were not in a punt safe, but Johnson still had the savviness to be in position to make the play. I wish he could have gotten him down, but that was not the only missed tackle of the game by far. Probably just the biggest one.

People who don't like the Dooley hire will go to any length to subtley or blatantly bash him. All coaches, rookie or otherwise, make mistakes and take risks that don't pay off all of the time. If Johnson makes that tackle, we could all be saying CUM is an idiot. I don't buy the rookie coach argument.

Check out yesterday's Vikings - Dolphins game. Although there were no trick plays called per se, Childress made a number of calls that were killers, especially in hindsight (our specialty at this site, by the way). Between his 4th down gambles that failed and Favre's tossing a few balls up for grabs, I can only imagine how they'd be ripped to shreds on this site.

Regarding Meyer's call for the fake punt, it was a great gamble that paid off...would have been very interesting if they had gone ahead and punted or we had stopped them on the fake punt. I'd love to see where our momentum at that time would have taken us.

However, there is that saying about ifs and buts, candy and nuts, and Merry Christmases...

It was easy for Meyer to make that call when he doesn't fear what UT can do on offense. He probably thought that if he didn't convert that UT would have gone 3 and out.

And one more for the OP: *gel

I think we need 2 seperate "Volnations"!
1 can be called nega-Volnation and the other Volnation!
Sometimes this place is worse than my wife when she is on one of those "emotional rollercoaster" rides.

Preach it!
I completely agree. I have told myself several times that i'm not getting back on here bc there are so many nega-vol fans out there. But I guess every team has them, some ppl are just so unhappy with their own lives that everything around them has to be horrible as well.

there is no "bright side, or half-full glass" for these ppl, they will be miserable until the day they die regardless what it's about.

Hopefully the good will outweigh the bad.
