I have a legitimate question regarding a flat screen.

If I upgrade to a newer flat screen how big of a visual difference is a 51" from say, a 42-46" TV?

Right now I have a smaller 32" and I don't have the biggest living room. The 32" is a tad too small but getting into the 50's seems unnecessary for me. Also there is a considerable price drop going from a 51" to a 46".

I'm not buying one today but I am looking at a new media cabinet for my TV and if I were to upgrade to a 50" TV or larger there is no point in me buying this furniture because it won't fit.

in a small room you probably wouldn't notice the difference as much in 46->51 as you will in 32->46. We moved from a 32" to a 50" in our living room and it's amazing I ever thought the 32" was workable. It's now the bedroom tv

Yeah, my Bravia is quite old and nearing retirement age.

I have a long narrow living room cause my house was built in the 50's and I use a 42 and it's great for my needs. But if you have the room bump to a 46". My BIL has a 50+ inch in a small living room and it's fine but seems like overkill to me. Especially when you can get a 240hz or something high end in a smaller size for the same price as a large 120hz with less contrast.

FYI my 42 is a vizio with wifi that included built in wifi, blue tooth remote, screen backlight self adjustment and a slide out keyboard for use with the widgets. They make that same tv in a 46 and that's what I would recommend. Samsung is also top shelf my dad has a 52" Samsung 240 hz and it's silky smooth

I'm a huge fan of the Samsung products and will likely buy a samsung TV. I read last month that Sony has lost a TON of money on TV sales. Wondering if they will eventually get out of the TV business altogether.

My 42" is in the bedroom now, and after upgrading to 50", I'm seriously considering upgrading to a 58".

You absolutely will notice a difference going from 46" to 51". Depending on the size of the room, 46" is more than adequate, but 51" is just way better.

I have a relatively small living room. Viewing distance is 15-20', and the 50" is the perfect size for the room. But there's nothing wrong with going bigger :wink2:

I'm also in the market for a new tv. 46" in the livingroom right now. I can't decide if I want to go 3d or not. Not sure I would ever use it.

Yes, eventual back problems when it has to be moved.

I already took one to the dump and it took two friggin people to get it up on the tail gate of the truck. I squatted down to grab it and RV had to help me power lift it on the truck.

You'll be waiting a while. Current technology is not going to be capable of producing this in a practical format.

You're going to be waiting for Star Wars style hologram projectors

Viewing Distance / Screen Size

1 - 5ft / 40"
5 - 10ft / 50"
>10ft / 65"+

I stopped at Target during lunch and looked at the sizes. Seeing a 51"+ in person, they were waaaay to big for my purposes and would look strange. A 46" was a huge improvement from a 32" and would be fine. I even thought the 40" were an improvement.

Weird. It's the exact opposite for me. They always look small in the store, then when I get them home by themselves, they appear much larger............

I'm too lazy to edit that, so by including (no homo), you cannot post in the out of context thread.

well like I said, my living room isn't that huge so a monitor of 55" would look a bit odd
