The receivers did a couple different drills working on release off the line and downfield blocking. Kevin Beard was very hands on during the two sessions, with Butch Jones looking on as well. I thought Jennings and Callaway were far and away the best two during the drill.

Finally, the quarterbacks did a number of different footwork drills, but most noteworthy, Mike Canales had the group working on play-action passes under center. A sign of a new offensive wrinkle?
The running back group was extra-thin Tuesday.

During center-quarterback exchange drills, Jashon Robertson, who has assumed the No. 1 spot with Coleman Thomas sidelined, was snapping with Quinten Dormady.
Jesse Simonton

And the day was particularly technique-focused with quarterbacks working on dropbacks, handoffs, play-fakes and more while there were a number of candidates vying for punt return duties — with Cam Sutton, the previous record-setting, sitting merely a few yards behind them beneath a tent looking on as Sutton awaits the NFL Draft.

Also in a twist: for the first time ever we saw all offensive position players running through the “thunderburst” chute that simulates running through defenders with a row of tightly hinged plastic arms on each side. Quarterbacks, running backs, wideouts and tight ends performed the chute drill, which also featured a pad-pop from QB coach Mike Canales on the front end and a relentless manager who took a repeated beating as players emerged from the chute on the other end with the pad-thud.

The quarterbacks weren’t throwing to any receivers. All five of them were taking snaps under center and throwing to a manager. Butch Jones wasn’t around them at all, focusing on the running backs and wide receivers.

The duration of what I saw from the QBs had them under center. There was one drill where the quarterbacks joined the running backs and receivers simulating running through tacklers. Jarrett Guarantano impressed me with his speed and quick first step. When he runs with his head down he looks a lot like Joshua Dobbs taking off on a scramble.

Once again, I think that Sheriron Jones is a fantastic third option at quarterback for Tennessee. He has a fluid motion that looks very smooth when he’s throwing the ball. His compact throwing motion has really improved since his first year on campus two years ago. Will McBride seems to be getting a lot more comfortable in this group. The freshman learning curve is far from over for him, but the day-to-day operations of practice are coming to him easier now.

Latrell Williams continues to show that he’s ready for a breakout season. I was impressed by his quickness of the ball. He’s a guy who Tennessee should be able to rely on in the slot, especially in short yardage situations.
Will Boling

CORNER ROTATION: Rising senior Justin Martin and rising sophomore Marquill Osborne led the cornerbacks who received significant work during the early portion of Tuesday’s practice that was open to media.

COACH JOHN KELLY: Of note from running-back drills early in practice, John Kelly, the only scholarship running back going through drills at practice on Tuesday, subbed in place of running backs coach Robert Gillespie during special-team periods.

DON’T YOU FORGET ABOUT MARCUS TATUM: If Tennessee has its full allotment of healthy scholarship options along the offensive line this fall, there are going to be some hurt feelings. If everyone is available to play, then at least a couple of good-or-better players won’t be in the first-team lineup, which is a good problem to have but a problem nonetheless.

I could be very wrong, but it seems like Richmond isn't taking control of the LT position. Hope I am wrong, but if he isn't then Big Trey might see the field sooner than we thought.

I'm loving it. Sounds like a very good practice and different from the past three/ four seasons. I think we have a better team then last year. I really do. Just depends on how the season plays out.

I think that trey is going to start as number two but they are prepping him and will probably throw him in every chance they get.

You are probably right. The thing I'm concerned with is that our former 5-star LT isn't making sure he locks down the position. Never really here about him in practice reports and it looked like Tatum was had better technique and was pushing the sled better. I know one drill doesn't give you close to a full picture, but it just seems like Richmond is living up to expectations so far.

🤔

We are deeper. We are more experienced then in the past as these youngn's have already been in the system for a couple of years. Guys that we haven't even seen much of have been prepping for a season or two under wraps. The Attitude of this team is very mature, and guys, we haven't seen a pro style attack like this in many years. They are focusing on all the right things in spring. Things you want them to focus on. They are doing the right things. The players are not the only ones that have learned. At this point we just have to make sure we don't take it for granted. Keep working at it. Don't let the hype go to your heads.

Where are we deeper other than the OL? I hope you're right!

Deeper at wide out, deeper at QB, the running backs is deeper, admittedly they have a lot to prove. The only RB to do anything to this point is Jelly I know, but we have more bodies to fill holes. I'm not as up to date on my defensive side as there are a lot of names that I don't know, or just haven't panned out yet but this should be the year they do make a name. Names like joey cave? There are guys that are going to come out of woodwork this year.
