I agree. Too much pride. And I wonder how many coaches with a NC took a significant step down later in life.
well, probably none, at least none that didn't want to anyway. at this point, with his resume etc...he'll do what he wants to do. and i don't think he wants go try his hand at another BCS conf. school, which works out for him.

I'm not sure how there is too much of a comparison considering Tubby won his Championship while basically feeding off of Pitino's scraps and Fulmer has done it all himself as far as his championships go.

That was always the argument in Lex, but after watching every game that team played, I wondered if Pitino could have won with that particular team.

The other real difference is that Tubby left because he refused to kiss butt, and CPF is still here because he has done exactly that with all the right people.

I fully beleive he would be snapped up in a hurry if he wanted. Plenty of programs in worse shape than Tn. I do agree however, he'd probably retire, he sure don't need the money. And if you think his paycheck is big, just wait til they pay for him to leave, that'll be a heckofa lotta money.

Tubby also has more respect among his peers.

Maybe because his peers have figured out how to beat him? :)

My perception, right or wrong, of Tubby, is that he didn´t have that fire to dominate year-in, year-out. I wish him the best at Minnesota, but I see the same old pattern starting there.

Tubby wouldn't cowtow to recruits. That was really the bottom line.

He's the first guy I thought of too. Also, Lou Holtz took on a big time reclamation project at South Carolina after being at Notre Dame and Bobby Ross ended up at Army.
Bobby Ross sought out the Army job because it pained him to see the Black Knights dropping into the abyss. He also wanted to re-establish some tradition there. Ended up being a terrible hire because he continued to try and run a pro style offense at a school where the wishbone gives best opportunity to win games. Holtz had effectively worn out his welcome everywhere that he'd been and I think much of his mystique was gone because people started to notice the serious downward trend on the back side of a Holtz hiring. SC was pretty desperate and just needed the name recognition to get back on the path to even having a program. They followed that hiring with one of the best in the history of the SEC.

Speaking of USC, Spurrier is a good example.
