Former UT assistant coach Doug Mathews was talking with a caller this week and the caller gave the analogy of UK under Tubby and UT under Phil.
Two prominent programs, one in basketball, one in football (at the time)both had/have won a national championship, both had/have seen their programs dwindle over the last years, yet Phil is still at the helm while Tubby has been long gone.Go figure.

"Long gone?" He was still the coach at Kentucky 6 months ago.

That's what I was gonna say.

My next door neighbor is a big Cats fan (as are most people around here) and I listened to him rant and rave for years about how Tubby was pulling down the program with his ineffective coaching, lack of enthusiasm, etc...

We watched a lot of football together on Saturday. After the Vols blowout and the Cats triumph over Louisville, he got to hear some "Tubby-esque" rants from me about the UT coaching staff.

There are definitely some parrallels.

biggest difference...Tubby saw the writing on the wall, and was also smart enough to know that he was still a commodity in the coaching arena, so he picked up his toys and went somewhere else.

i dont think CPF has that option, and nor do i think he's looking for another option. hence he's "staying the course" here at UTK.

but the perception of the two, in regards to the respective fan bases is accurate.

I guarantee CPF has plenty of respect among coaches, and could land another job in a short period of time, if he chose too. I'm not saying we don't need change, but too say Fulmer couldn't get another job is absurd.

Not one other team from a BCS conference would hire him.

you're right, there's probably some sun belt, swac or meac schools that would love to have CPF.

I heard from people close to the Nebraska program that when they were looking to replace Solich, someone mentioned Fulmer, and they just laughed. Nobody could pay them enough to hire him.

no, i think once fulmer is done at TN, he'll be done coaching. whether anyone wants him or not. his only ambition was related to UT. i don't see him packing up and moving to coach anywhere else.

I agree. Too much pride. And I wonder how many coaches with a NC took a significant step down later in life.
