Ok...I've said my piece, and had my fun. Josh Heupel was not who I wanted, and I still believe we left opportunities on the table. That being said, we could have...and have (recently) done much worse. All joking, griping and Nega-Vol'ing aside, I truly hope Coach Heupel exceeds my reasonably lowered expectations by a country mile. And he very well may.

I have long stated reasonable and achievable goals for this program. I do not suggest we are anywhere near being in the playoff picture, nor should we expect we deserve a coach that will in the short-term take us there. However, a new coach can get me fully in his corner with just a few simple achievements.

1. Improve- Develop players. Creatively Scheme. Do more with less (this may be important around here for a while)
2. Beat who you are supposed to.
3. Compete with our Big-3 rivals. Avoid the blowouts. Come home with your shield, or on it. Be prepared, avoid embarrassment, play like a champion, and I will support you.
4. Continue to revisit point number 1.

As long as we are wandering in the wilderness of NCAA sanctions, that is all I ask. Use this time to establish your system, recruit to it, and prepare for the day the sanctions are lifted...because that is when the clock really starts.

I remember Josh Heupel and the 2000 season well. He has been around programs that win at a high level. I hope it translates here. Keep it respectable and I, along with many others with get on board.

Go Vols.

I get where you’re coming from and respect it. I think majority of us have that looming doubt in the back of our heads. As we should after the crappy hands we’ve been dealt over the years.

I guess about all I've got left to say is.....OK, whatever UT.

Maybe it will be great, maybe it won't.

It won't take too long to find out.

This time we have the time to give. We are playing with a short deck until further notice. If he can make the football fun, and competitive under the conditions we face it will be a win. A high powered offense can do that...look at Ole Miss this year. Losing season, and they had a ball.

I just want it know that I don't expect championships right now...and really the East is always the goal for me. You can talk about other things after you climb that mountain.

I agree completely.
If we can get our defense playing well, we may be on to something with Heupel.

The reason I was coming around with our last coach was #2 - beat who you're supposed to beat. It seemed like we did that, and to me that signaled turning the corner. Well, we see how that worked out. I can't wait to truly get to that point, and then beyond that point to #3.

I’ve been trying to talk myself into the hire all day, and was actually in a good place with it until I heard that Orlando Fox reporter interviewed on 104.5 The Zone

Well said mate. Beat who you're supposed to beat, look like you're well coached and sometimes rise above the talent level difference and beat or scare the crap outta who your not supposed to beat. We've got a chance to do that. Those who expect championships and contending with Alabama need to take a back seat for a while and let this guy give it his best shot. Can't be worse then that bloody moron Beldar. We should all be rejoicing for that fact alone.

Well said man. While I am definitely not thrilled about this hire, I am optimistic. I really hope that JH can actually coach. What I mean is the things you mentioned. Show improvement. Develop. And be a leader.

We all want TN to be a really good team. I sincerely hope this hire is a step in the right direction.

I've been saying over and over fans are getting their hopes up to be disappointed. Tennessee is a very hard sell to coaches considered a splash hire. So now we settle for less I hope it's works out.

It's been so long since we developed players. If CJH can do that, and elevate the level of competition....give us hope, we'll reward him. Compete, and stop the embarassment.

Well put Boro.

I'm not gonna penalize JH (or another coach for that matter) for the ditch UT has been digging for the last decade +. And its deeper now than at any other time. To take that a step further. We finally broke a trend and hired what many see is a top shelf AD. He wasn't going to fix all those years in a week either.

I dont expect him to be great, especially early. But we need him to be ok pretty quick and build from there.
He may not be a 10 win coach, he may not win the east, he may not beat the big 3 on the schedule. But he needs to be doing everything else after the AA smoke clears. And if the worse thing he has done is stabilized the place if he were to leave hes done the job IMO.
At which point you have a better situation to sell to another guy with all that $.
