Chaney Heading To Knoxville, Officially
December 31st, 2008 3:12 pm ║ Posted By: John Pennington ║ Permalink ║ Tags: Tennessee
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has confirmed ESPN.com’s earlier report that Rams’ tight end coach Jim Chaney has accepted the job of offensive coordinator at Tennessee.
That’s Chaney at left, from his days as the fifth Beatle.
Tennessee is expected to make a formal announcement in the next few days.
Rumblings among some upper-level boosters in Knoxville reveal some growing concerns about the coaching staff being put together by new coach Lane Kiffin.
Tennessee was prepared to set a new standard for the amount of money paid to an SEC coaching staff, and they’re well on their way with a million dollar-plus deal for Monte Kiffin, but the big names expected to be bought with those big funds aren’t as big as expected.
Ed Orgeron, who is apparently headed to LSU, was someone that Vol fans had believed to be a done-deal-Vol since Kiffin was hired. Losing him, and their former defensive coordinator John Chavis to LSU, has some folks scratching their heads.
Would UT fans rather have 68 year-old Monte Kiffin for $1.2 million or John Chavis and Ed Orgeron for $1.1 million? That’s the question some are asking this afternoon.
Add to this the fact that some influential boosters were upset when Kiffin skipped a meet-and-greet two weeks ago at a Vol basketball game and the new coach’s start on Rocky Top is feeling a bit rocky indeed.
