Why.....because he wears his hat backwards, chest bumps his guys, and plays the PR game like he's playing chess and the other staffers are playing checkers??
Whatever position Taylor coaches automatically gets eons better due to his ability to get all he can out of guys. He's a savvy PR guy and he wants to be the man somewhere one of these days. Chavis isn't as gifted with the PR and seems content to be Barney Fife forever.
That's the reason I hate some of the perceived nepotism on this staff. There is a faction (rightly or wrongly) that believes that Phil Fulmer doesn't want upwardly mobile assistant coaches, partially because he doesn't want the situation that John Majors was faced with when Phil, himself, became a commodity. In my business, I want people under me who want to be something greater, but are professional about it. If Trooper was not doing his job and backstabbing folks, that is one thing, but all I see is the man working.
I saw the guy in Smyrna Friday night scouting Rod Wilks, talking with kids, signing autographs, and texting Phil everytme Rod caught a TD. He then hopped in his dealer car after halftime, drove himself back to Knoxville, and his two "afterthought" receivers each had 100 yard days the next evening.
I'd say if Phil is smart, he'd better tell those two to iron it out, because right now, one of them has more "What Have You Done For Me Lately" points than the other one has. Heck, I have had people tell me that Chief doesn't even go on the road recruiting. I'm sorry, but Mickey Andrews, Bud Foster, and Jon Tenuta even do some recruiting, and Chief ain't in those guys' ballparks as far as being a DC.
I'm not even an anti-Chavis guy, but his units have lacked for two seasons now, where as everything Taylor touches turns to gold at this point. I realize that the difference between a DC and a WR coach is night and day, but when you factor in what Taylor does in recruiting, in addition to his skill development work, he's the most productive coach on this staff.
