Trooper and former players recruiting against vols?

I will admit that I used to like TT when he was here. I guess because I was only seeing him through orange colored glasses. However, after he left TN I finally was able to see him for the type of person that he truly is, and that's a lowdown, scumbag, POS, whose very unprofessional and wants to hurt UT at any chance he gets. I'm sure he'll be that way towards AU too when he no longer has a job there.

there was no violation committed. If GJ talking to a recruit is a violation, it happens all the time at every school. Recruits visit and they swap cell phone numbers with players on the team. They become friends and talk all the time on phone, swap text messages and even facebook messages. This no violation and if it was the NCAA could penalize every school.

Its no different than me havin my friends in my cell phone address book and talking to them.

People looking for a violation are dreaming IMO

So at one point does the NCAA consider it acting as an agent of the university?

Or is this one of the things that the NCAA turns a blind eye to because its too hard to police?

I guess what I'm asking is, if a player(s) (current, former, or graduating senior) calls up a recruit to sell him on the University, how does the NCAA handle it? It seems like this is an awfully simple way to circuit the contact limitation rules for a coach.

Jones is on record as definitely talked to a recruit on or around NSD about schools he was considering signing to. That seems to be something qualitatively different than exchange cell numbers just like all the other recurits do. I would think that puts UT in a bad place with the NCAA if they want to make it an issue of recruiting violations, which right now, they pretty much do.

I looked into because I remembered a story about something with Iowa athletics and Ashton Kutcher. Its not a celebrity rule per se, but it is the general no contact rules regarding individuals who represent a University's interests.

It was enough of an issue that Iowa self reported two unintentional Secondaries for two recruits meeting, taking pictures with Kutcher and Demi Moore at an Iowa basketball game.

Iowa tells NCAA that recruits met Kutcher, Moore - SignOnSanDiego.com

that is the same rule that applies to me as a season ticket holder.. or a member of a message board that promotes Tennessee athletics.. or as a donor..

Let me answer this way.

I can guarantee you James Stone talked by phone many times with Tiny Richardson about coming to Tennessee to play football. Should we turn that in?

I refuse to believe that Jones would tell another player to not come to Tennessee. I'd believe he might share positive opinions on CTT, but that's it.
Larry, I know you have confirmed communication between Gabe and Gerald, but why isn't this line of thinking completely possible? If Gabe's family had some reservations about trusting Trooper, a reference from a former player whose school was in competition for said recruit could prove especially advantageous in a closely contested battle.

I think if Cut wanted Peyton to talk to a recruit about Duke, Peyton would do so in a heartbeat. If we were recruiting the same kid? Doubt he would but I'm sure he talks to recruits about Duke.

Okay, fair enough, but you know what I meant. Of course if UT wasn't recruiting a player Duke is, nobody would have issues with Peyton speaking on behalf of Cutcliffe. I think you missed my point entirely.

I have not gotten, myself, confirmation that Gerald talked to Wright. I've seen all the message board postings but that is not confirmation.

Assuming it happened, that could very well be context of a conversation. Know knows the conversations but those involved and they could have different versions. Happens all the time in ocnversations.

entirely possible I missed it. but got it now. :)

Assuming? GJ said he talked to him, theres no assuming. Everyone is only "assuming" what was said. He did it! I think the only way we find out is to hear from AR! IMO!
GUILTY! :nono:

I gathered that generally was happening based on your prior post, and that's pretty much what I'm confused aobut.

At what point, if ever, has the NCAA ruled that the player's have been acting as an agent. That's what has me baffled about this. The not contact rules are pretty specific about no one on behalf of the university acting as its agent. But then you have the players with unbridled access to the recruits in fact if not by rule.

If its just a free for all with them contacting recruits? If so, why isn't every program having their players call recruits no stop? Or are they?

You want to hear an Auburn fan's perspective? Had an argument about this on facebook with a buddy of mine that goes to AU. This is just a snippet from the whole conversation. Dude seems a bit disgruntled if you ask me...

Me: Eric, people who knew Trooper in Knoxville will tell you that he is as dirty as they come. And to be honest, we couldn't cut ties with him and his former recruits any faster. The man is a snake in the grass who will do anything and everythi...ng to get ahead. You don't have to believe me and you can call it sour grapes or whatever, but Lane Kiffin's sleazy recruiting tactics and The Backwards Hat Towel Waiver's are no different. You want to take a look at his character, how about the fact that he sued his son's coach because the coach wouldn't let his son wear a certain hair style. Who the hell does that?

Now for the whole Lowder thing, the FBI did investigate because of what you said. But first of all, why in the hell would you want a guy accused of major fraud a staple at your football program? And second, the thing that's surprising with the Lowder case is the fact that, like I said before, each board member's finances were directly tied to Lowder. So now your whole Board of Trustees is connected in a huge fraud case? That doesn't sound too good...

It sounds to me like your entire athletic department is run by a bunch of sleaze bags. Auburn isn't the owner of the most major infractions in the NCAA for nothing. Even more than Bama. Wow...

As for plagiarizing a message board, I'm assuming you don't have connections in the FBI giving you the low down on Lowder's case, so what exactly so you think you're doing by posting what you just did?

E: Okay first of all I could care less what you or anyone thinks of our WR coach and if he sued another coach. That's nor here nor there. All I know is he is a nice guy, great recruiter, and everyone here loves him and is glad we have him. But... that is my point exactly... bringing up **** about his sons hair is just irrelevant information that is passed around on those boards because people don't have anything better to gossip about. Its like a bunch of middle schoolers mom gossiping about who did what.. its a joke.

Now as for the Lowder issue. I never said once that I wanted someone like that to be the staple of our athletic program and if you ask anyone in Auburn, they will tell you he is a sleaze bag. So don't be trying to put words in my mouth saying i like Bobby Lowder or think hes a good guy. All i said was the reason the FBI was investigating him was bank fraud, not paying players. It has nothing to do with Auburn. And I have no idea where your getting this information about how our board members finances are tied directly to Lowder nor is it even true. Your gonna need to back that up with some evidence other than a message board cause I've never heard any of that in my life. And Lowder's bank went under 3 years ago so how would he have possibly paid these players people are talking about like Cam and Dyer?
And how could that possibly make our board of trustees connected with a fraud case. They are not top executives in the bank and would have absolutely no connection/influence in how Colonial Bank stated their numbers incorrectly. I dont even see how you could possibly come up with something so irrational. So if I owned stock in Enron years ago, does that tie me to the fraud they committed? Not even close, I have no say in what goes on with the company's financial statements, nor does it even effect me. That was just a really ignorant comment by you to think that that would make our board tied into the case. That would be like saying if I had a savings account open at Colonial Bank for $40, I would be in trouble because of the bank I use went under and is being accused of falsely stating there financial position haha wow.

Auburn hasn't been in any trouble in 18 years. Can Tennessee say the same thing? I dont think so. Now I don't have an inside source with the FBI or anything like that but I do attend the University and am apart of it so naturally I hear things correctly instead of having to go on message boards to read false information. Now I realize all message boards start rumors about other schools and have read stuff like that but Im smart enough to realize this happens and you just have to take it with a grain of salt man. I'm not gonna get on here after reading some message boards and start bashing other schools before I even know if the information is true/relevant. Now I'm not trying to start any **** with Tennessee or anything like that, I like Tennessee and have no problem with them at all but when I get on here and read **** about someone bashing my school, I have to step in and correct them. DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THOSE MESSAGE BOARDS. I just don't understand how you got on here and said Lowder and Auburn is being investigated by the FBI for paying players, then completely changed your argument towards our board of trustees involved in a fraud case to god knows what. You ARE one of those people who gets on the message boards and starts rumors and I think I just proved that to you. Now go dig up some evidence other than what you read on message boards and show me something I've said is not true.

not trying to hate or be a dick, but instead of hearing some **** on a message board and going and spreading that rumor all over the place, why don't you try to see if it is actually true or has evidence to back it up... just saying man

I don't think the players can call the recruits, but the recruits can more than likely call the player same as the coaches.

that is the same rule that applies to me as a season ticket holder.. or a member of a message board that promotes Tennessee athletics.. or as a donor..

I understand that now that I reread the Iowa article, and stated exactly that when I referenced it in the prior post.

And while you are technically correct, its pretty obvious that if Kutcher and Moore were Mr. and Mrs. Jones from Des Moines, this wouldn't have been an "Unintended Secondary" that Iowa would have reported. The fact that they were famous and took pictures with recruits was the issue. The issue wasn't that they were season ticket holders or posters on an athletic board that promotes Iowa atletics or donors or random fans chanting go Hawkeyes.

Its a side issue to the thread in general though.

By the way, you can just say, the NCAA makes up the meaning of the rules as it enforces them haphazardly and capriciously and I'd be satisfied.

If that is the case, I don't see what Jones did wrong if things went exactly as he described them. Whether that's how thing went, I can't say and haven't seen anything definitive that says otherwise.

Although what TT did is unethical if he handed out Jones's number for that purpose. Its just classless to put a former player that you supposedly care about in the position Jones is now in.

Auburn dude seems accurate and factual, while the UT fan looks like an embarrassing rumor-mongering nitwit.
