Looking for new Trash service:

Well, we've been loyal customers to Waste Management for literally decades until we received a phone call recently letting us know they are changing their trucks to use the automated arm and to also explain to us in detail about how we should precisely position our trash cans at the curb from now on. This means they will no longer even be exiting the truck which means they will no longer pick up lose items. We frequently but not all the time have some random item(s) that won't fit into a can which was never a problem as they would always take it. That has ended forthwith and this is unacceptable to us.

I recently learned TN Trash service was just bought by WM in June this year so that's not even a consideration now. I'm sure TN Trash customers will soon be getting "retrained" on how to properly use their trash cans.

I'm looking at Waste Connections they're available for my neighborhood and pick up on Tuesdays. Any other recommendations?

We had tri county trash but they went out of business all of a sudden due to some shady stuff internally about 2 months ago. Went with waste connections and haven’t had any issues yet. We found it was essentially waste management or waste connections for our area (East Knoxville)

We did the exact same. The tri-county closing was brutal. Just one day up and vanished, had to drive to the dump for a few weeks before we got waste management

Waste connections gave us the same price as tri county for the year so that was nice but just a gigantic pain like you said for a couple weeks.

My feedback is to get used to it. And learn where the landfill is located or where the green box collection sites are, there you can get rid of the larger bulky trash that will not fit into the can at the curb.

I make a dump run weekly for cardboard, or grass clippings... as the bin collection site is 4 miles from the house. Just need to plan accordingly. I see this new way for trash haulers as the new norm.

Waste Management is probably the most expensive of all the choices in the area but we stuck with them out of loyalty and because they took everything. In my opinion you should only have to choose one or the other, trash pickup or dump but not both. Side note: You should just be mulching the grass clippings back into the yard rather than bagging them.

I agree on the mulching aspect... I am going to give that a shot.

I use Ward waste. $17 a month in my area, but that is for 1 can and auto draft. I think it is an extra $5 for each added can.

My trash collectors use the arm if it’s just the can, but they still get out and pick up any loose or bulk item I put out there

Ok, between Ward Waste and Waste Connections can anyone make a compelling argument for or against either?

As a WM customer I’m curiously following what you decide to do. I may have to consider switching in the future.

I called today to verify with WM main office. They said they switched to the "arm" and will no longer be picking up loose items. I told them that's unacceptable for us and we would like to cancel the service and to issue a refund for the remaining time we already prepaid for.

I'll let you know who we choose. I'll call Ward Waste tomorrow and ask some questions and feel them out. I'll definitely be making a decision sooner than later though since I'll need service by next week.

Did they say they will actually refund the amount? Are they going to charge you a fee to remove their cans? I'm pretty sure that they have something in their cancellation policy that states they charge like $50 to remove cans if a customer cancels.

It'll be a prorated refund based on when I asked them to cancel service(the day after they pick up the trash) and there is no can removal fee for this area.

Ward Waste has worse than banker hours if you need to speak to a human though. They're only open 8:30am to 12:30pm. I shot them an email, hopefully they respond fairly quickly.

When I've needed something, I've gotten a quick response; and the response has been from the owner. I will take shorter hours for the attention of ownership if I have a question.

The owner did reply very quickly through email. Ward Waste RFID chips all their cans and the drivers only pick up their cans so not only would our own private can not be used but we'd have to pay an additional $10 a month for a second can. Even with signing a 1 year auto draft contract at $17(includes one 96 gallon can + 2 overflow trash bags) a month + $10 for an additional can it put us at $81 quarterly. Ward Waste would be a steal for someone living by themselves or a couple that would only ever fill 1 can. We are a bigger group and apparently we are trashy.

I pulled the trigger on Waste Connections. They are $61.45 quarterly($20.48 a month). They provide a 96 gallon can and will pick up a second private can and loose items for no additional charge. They'll even take branches if they're broken/cut into 4 foot lengths and bundled.
