I will say up front that I have and always will support the current vols staff regardless of sport.
I admire Cuonzo's work in salvaging the basketball program after Pearl was let go. His tough style of play and mentality is definitely recognized and a necessary asset.

However, I am wondering whether or not the coaching really is up to the level of serious national contention. When watching Kentucky's practices, Calipari can expose even the best recruit's flaws.

Are players like Jarnell Stokes or Robert Hubbs, 5* guys who were almost guaranteed tabs to be 1st round picks coming out of high school, even getting any better??

Thoughts?

1. Where have you seen this? I don't recall draft express, or any other reputable mock draft site tabbing either guy as lottery picks coming out of high school.

2. You're gonna write off Hubbs 11 games into his freshman season? Apparently completely dismissing the fact that he has been slowed by a shoulder injury?

Who said Jarnell and Hubbs were 1st round picks coming out of high school. Maybe Jarnell but still, he was still technically a high school kid his freshman year. Now Hubbs, i never heard that.

I think the main point of the question was, is Martins players getting any better under his watch? Maymon improved significantly in Martins 1st season, and McRae has improved continuously. Stokes is interesting, his freshman season, he had Maymon by his side. His sophomore season, he was expecting to have Maymon, but suddenly had to learn how to be the only actual post presence. That's quite a challenge for a young kid. I thought he adjusted well. This year, he now has Maymon back and is again having to adjust. My concerns about Stokes is his lack of defense, and he seems to become lazy at times. As far as the rest of the players, some have made slight improvements, but nothing significant.

most players seem to have regressed under CCM.

Sparty has mentioned it several times and I agree, this is not the same Stokes we saw in his first game vs UK

I may be wrong. But didn't Jordan attend a lot of camps this summer to improve ball handling. That would be on Jordan not CCM. I honestly can't stand to hear CCM talk. I get sleepy listening to him. And the CCM show. As much as I dislike Bob Kesling. He excites me more than Martin.

Yeah, Maymon and mcrae were beasts before CM got there.

we have no idea what maymon and mcrae looked like because they didnt get consistent playing time.

if you want to give CCM credit for writing them in the line up, then thats fine. hard to say if he developed them.

based on cuonzo's coaching ability, i'll say very little development due to cuonzo has taken place.

I just don't see our guys getting any better under CM. If he doesn't make the dance this yr I don't see how in the world he can keep his job

Don't think it's really about improvement.
You've got a bunch of talented guys playing in a system and for a coach that stifles talent because he doesn't know how to adjust and use it.

Let's not act like we don't know what has caused Maymon's regression.

All players should progress. McRae has. In 3 years, you can't really name another. JRich has been subpar all year, while being handcuffed by his coach, until last game. Ballhandling still suffers, passing suffers, shooting suffers, defense has gotten worse.

I don't think we have had a coach that has developed players on a consistent basis. Pearl won games but we really never saw him develop anyone? Maybe JP and Chism? But it took until their senior year. Hall and Swiperboy got worse every single year they were here.

He led his team to 2 NIT's, was benched twice last year, almost a 3rd time, and basically asked to leave the program.

He didn't regress. Trae was also the SEC player of the week twice last year. His game developed under CCM. I think Martin was frustrated with Trae as were most fans. But Trae won us a lot of games. He would disappear at times though.

I accidently liked that post from mobile. Regarding Trae, where did he improve? Ballhandling? Left hand? Leadership? Defense? Passing? Lateral quickness? Focus? He could shoot the 3, go right and had a little pullup when he was 16. You don't get benched multiple times in your Jr year if you are progressing.

You don't become sec player of the week twice in one season if you're not.

Seems to me Trae's struggles were between his ears.

There's enough ammo to use on CCM without reaching. Player development is a reach. Richardson has improved. Jordy was a 6th man this time last year. Jeronne Maymon was much improved under Martin before injury. People act like Stokes hasn't got better but he has. He just hasn't lived up to people's expectations. The guy is a walking double double. It's like people want the whole team to average 20 points. It's ridiculous. Martin deserves criticism but you can tell when people start nitpicking and this is one of those times in my opinion.

Then answer the mutiple questions I posed regarding traes improvement in basketball skills. He didn't improve in any of those categories. Can you give me 2 areas of improvement from a freshman to Jr? I can give you a dozen where he didn't.
One good game or two out of 25+ doesnt mean improvement to me, especially when he's benched soon thereafter.

And Stokes walked on campus as a double double. His defense and offensive skill set hasn't improved. He has the same offensive weapons he showed up with, minus a couple that have disappeared.
