So my son and I were at the game today and I am confused about the play where Kongbo was flagged, ball went through end zone for touchback, yet they got the ball half the distance to the goal. I thought if it was touchback, we would get ball, or if they took penalty, it would be 15 yds from LOS.

Tim Priest made a comment about the officials making the ruling up or something similar....

IMO, it should have been tac'd onto the end of the play. Should have been UT ball on the 10 yard line.

I want to see the by-law that explains it. I have never seen that before. At worst I would have thought Bama ball 15 yards from original los. Or our ball at the 20 then half the distance. I’ve never seen half a play count? Anyone have a reference?

False, the penalty happened during the play. Alabama should keep the ball and the penalty should've been 15 yards from the line of scrimmage.

What if we had intercepted on the 20 instead of it being a fumble, they surely wouldn't get the ball at the 20+half the distance.

PENALTY –
Personal foul. 15 yards. For dead-ball fouls, 15 yards from the succeeding spot. Automatic first down for fouls by Team B if not in conflict with other rules. Penalties for Team A live-ball personal fouls behind the neutral zone are enforced from the previous spot. Safety if the live-ball foul occurs behind Team A’s goal line. [S7, S24, S25, S34, S38, S39, S40, S41, S45 or S46]. Flagrant offenders shall be disqualified [S47].

For Team A fouls during free or scrimmage kick plays: Enforcement may be either at the previous spot or the spot where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team B (field goal plays exempted) (Rules 6-1-8 and 6-3-13).

For Team B personal fouls during a legal forward pass play (Rules 7-3-12 and 10-2-2-e): Enforcement is at the end of the last run when it ends beyond the neutral zone and there is no change of team possession during the down. If the pass is incomplete or intercepted, or if there is a change of team possession during the down, the penalty is enforced at the previous spot.

And since there was a change in possession during the play, should have been from the original LOS.

Not that it matters at this point.

Why is it always UT that this crap happens to?

So a touchback would be change of possession, correct? If so, which official said it was touchback, it should have been 15yds from original spot. Obviously, it did not affect outcome, just wanted clarification.

My dad and I were arguing about it and I said I hadn't seen anything like that, but the refs call seemed wrong.

I thought it should either be from the LOS, or if they declined for whatever reason, it would be a touchback and our ball

For a good comparison here...

If we jumped offsides and they had a free play and threw a pick at the 2 yard line, they wouldn't get the ball at the 2 yard line. It should have ABSOLUTELY been 15 yards from the line of scrimmage because of the change of possession.

BUT... also that same drive at the goal line we had a holding penalty on 3rd and goal. It should've been an automatic 1st down for them, but they said replay 3rd down.

Football rules are always applied in order of what happened in the play. My guess is that the ball didn’t change possession during the play since it bouncing out of the end zone ended the play. That results in a touchback, not a turnover. Sure the non offensive team gets the ball in both cases, touchbacks and turnovers, but the rules treat them differently.

Seems like bama could take the play (they wouldn't have) or 15 yds. from line of scrimmage. THey shouldn't get the yards plus the penalty.

If the play had happened from the bama 10 yd line, thrown a pass complete for 20 yds and fumble do they get those yds plus the penalty? Doesn't make sense.

But it's the SEC so that does.

Exactly. And no one ever mentioned it
