Could you define "Top Ten end of season rankings by decade"? For instance, what does the number "2" represent for the years 2020-2025? Two top 10 finishes in the rankings 2020-2025? Two top 25 finishes in the rankings 2020-2025? Number 2 in total wins for the seasons 2020-2025? Inquiring minds want to know.1970-1979 3
1980-1989 2
1990-1999. 5
2000-2009 1
2010-2019 0
2020-2025. 2
With 4 years left to finish the decade, we have a chance to equal or better our best decade of national relevance. I remember after the 1996 season, many fans were saying the same things about Fulmer as they are Heupel right now. "He'll never win a championship". Of course we all know how that turned out. I don't know that Heupel will ever win a championship here, but I like the direction the program is headed. It's a much tougher league now, but we're on pace to equal our best decade in the last 50+ years, and this one started out far worse than any situation in my lifetime

I think what this shows more than anything is just how hyper-inflated our view of Tennessee football is. We have been, on average, a good but not great team. Even in the best decade of the 90’s we were still outside the top ten in half the years. This is why we can’t just go out and hire any coach, and why it really is special when a player like DGG chooses UT > OSU. We absolutely have a passionate fan base, an amazing history, and deep pockets. It’s not wrong to expect more, and dream of championships, all while maintaining perspective.1970-1979 3

Yes but also we are one of the top ten programs of alltime in the sport.I think what this shows more than anything is just how hyper-inflated our view of Tennessee football is. Yep. Nothing wrong with a strong desire to see our beloved Vols win a championship. It's also important to understand the chit show that Heupel quickly elevated us from to be nationally relevant again, and did so before the new portal rules and NIL. That's even more impressiveI think what this shows more than anything is just how hyper-inflated our view of Tennessee football is. We have been, on average, a good but not great team. I think the biggest reason people say it was a down league is that, outside of a couple of seasons, UGA and LSU performed well below their potential. Plus, KY, SC, and Vandy were three of the worst power conference programs in the country. All three started to get much better in the 2000s.Not down. It was a strong league then. Much stronger now.
That's always been an awful and out of context characterization some of you use
Plus Alabama wasn't performing up to their standards. Regardless, and comparatively speaking, the SEC was still one of the two or three strongest leagues.I think the biggest reason people say it was a down league is that, outside of a couple of seasons, UGA and LSU performed well below their potential.
