JPII’s Tate honored as area’s top player

Tennessean Staff Reports

Pope John Paul multi-purpose back Golden Tate has been selected as the Middle Tennessee player of the year by the Lawrenceburg Quarterback Club, which annually makes awards to the top players in the state.
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Tate, generally acknowledged by most recruiting services as one of the state’s top players, rushed for more than 1,400 yards, racked up more than 500 yards receiving and scored 24 touchdowns this season.
Selected as the West Tennessee player of the year was Chris Donald, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker from Huntingdon, widely regarded as the state’s top prospect. Harrison Smith of Knoxville Catholic, a 6-foot-2, 201-pound athlete, was named as the East Tennessee player of the year.
The Lawrenceburg Quarterback Club will announce its player of the year, recipient of the 26th annual Charles Greenhill Player of the Year trophy, at 9 a.m. Monday at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.
The club also announced its Prep Coach of the Year award, selecting Ralph Potter of McCallie School in Chattanooga.
McCallie finished 10-2 this season and runner-up in last week’s Division II-AAA BlueCross Bowl state championship game.
