The RPG, or role-playing game, has in the past ten years or so become a staple of the video game industry, with the support of the RPG juggernaut, Square Enix, arguably having decided the last few console wars. Back in the halcyon days of Milli-Vanilli and The Smurfs, the console RPG was predominantly the domain of pimply teenage misfits and overweight shut-ins, but nowadays.......

I thought RPGs and the Final Fantasy games were great back in the day. I don't care for them at all now. If another Final Fantasy game never came out, so be it. Instead, we'll get 12 more off-shoots and re-creations of FF7.

Obviously just an opinion, but one that took me awhile to accept myself. I kept playing the things getting more and more bored. Finally, I just popped in another game and had fun.

In no way am I saying they are bad games or suck. People like what they like. Just sharing.

It's kind of hard to not call a lot of them "shoot-offs." As the article stated, FFVII, while not the best RPG of all-time, is the most important of all-time, and probably among the most important games ever made. Practically all RPG's today are influenced primarily by Squaresoft's developments.

Another thing, while it was on the topic of XBox RPG's, they put fable on the honorable mentions list? That's alright, I guess, and it was a decent game, but it was probably one of the biggest 2-3 busts of last generation. To have that on there and not mention Jade Empire is a sham.

Kind of a crappy list overall... The guy gets points for putting games like Tactics and Earthbound high up, but loses a lot more for omissions such as Jade Empire, Panzer Dragoon, Phantasy Star and Elder Scrolls.

I thought it was a fairly sound list- especially the top 5. Kudos the the guy for having the balls to make FF7 an honorable mention! Props for giving FF3 top honors- I've easily play that game the most. I'd have Chrono Trigger a bit lower- like 3 or 2. I'd also add Ogre Battle to the honorable mention list.

I agree Phantasy Star should have been there but IMO FF XII is my all time favorite. Thats 12 not X-2 just to make sure there is no confusion.

little late to this thread but thanks for the link. Not the biggest RPG guy, but I did love the KOTOR's. Can't believe he put Sith Lords over the original though

Did anyone ever play Xenogears? It might be the most unique RPG I've ever played. It took FOREVER to get through.
