The biggest reason for that is the SEC is the worst it has been in a long time. LSU, UT, Auburn being down really hurts the conference since those are perennially in the SEC's top 6.

With the economy in shambles, it is smart for any school to accept a bowl game and make as much money for their school and conference as possible.

Too many bowl games. A team should have a minimum of 7 wins to qualify as well.
