Saw where today is his birthday.

I still remember watching "The Wizard" drop 51 on Auburn back in the day. He was one of my favorite players when I was little.

I guess it was the mid 80s when he and Fred Jenkins were in the same class. Oddly, I can't really remember anyone else on those teams off the top of my head.

I remember ol' John Snodgrass. One of the best names ever. Loved Tony White, too.

IMHO, last great point guard that played for the Vols... certainly knew how to handle and dish the ball and as you mentioned, could drop it in as well.

From Chattanooga, right? I remember that guy. He never played much though, did he? Seems like he was highly recruited though, if I remember correctly.

I thought he really did a good job of knocking down the mid-range jump shot.

I went to school with his youngest son Ronrico White. Ended up playing for UTC and had a decent career. Good people.

He graduated recently, didn't he?

You're younger than I pictured you Krager. :)

Yeah, he graduated last year. Rico was fortunate enough to play under Will Wade while he was coaching at UTC.

Yeah, I'm showing my age a little. I guess that's a compliment :p

I'm a Moc alum and remember going to SAC to see the Vols play UTC. Think it was @ 1982-85. Mocs were at there pinnacle then. I just remember Tony White raining 25 footers from all over that night. Not sure if 3pt line in at that time. Unstoppable he was. Anyone remember that game? I was torn the whole time. Cheering for my hometown Mocs, yet against the Vols in SAC where I had listened to dozens of John Ward announced games on the radio. I wasn't sure how to act.

My only other trip to Stokely was to see that unreal 1983 Philly 76ers team play the Celtics(?) in a pre-season game. Anybody else remember that too? (Without derailing the thread btw)

BTW, doubt I get the "you seem younger" comment after those posts. LOL!

Tony White, like all great scorers, had no conscience on the court. He never saw a shot he didn't like. That's not criticism. A scorer needs to think like that, especially playing on bad teams like he did.

He was no pg, however. His a/to was always under one. His best assist season was 77, with 87 turnovers. By contrast, Kevin Punter already has 90 assists, with 63 turnovers. Heck, Mr Turnover Armani Moore has 91 assists and 65 turnovers. CJ Watson had 160 assists his freshman year alone, with 85 turnovers. CJ wound up with 460 assists in his career. Ramar Smith had nearly as many assists in two seasons -224 -as Tony did in 4 seasons - 245.

Not a pg, but a great, great scorer, though.

I remember Fred Jenkins being the point guard for at least part of White's time here.

After I posted that I googled his name. It looks like he only lettered one year at UT. I can't remember how highly recruited he was. I was only 8 at the time and as you know the recruiting services that we have today didn't exist then.

Doug Roth is another name that comes to mind.

If the thread wasn't derailed by your reply, it will be by mine, lol. I remember watching the Washington Bullets and the Celtics in a preseason game back when Bird was still playing. I'm not sure when it was but I think that it was in TBA. I was so pumped to see Bird play. He got into a fight with Harvey Grant and both were ejected. Seems like it was at the first of the game, too. Sucked.

Sounds like Bird and Grant wanted the night off and agreed to fake a dust up early on.

I always thought Brandon Wharton was a great pure PG. I liked Tony Harris too. I also remember the Bulls vs the Bullets in TBA. '91 I think.

Those are a couple of great blasts from the past. Tony Harris played on some pretty decent teams.

Michael Brooks.

Tony White and Fred Jenkins arrived together and were kind of a combination point guard pair. After they got the ball across mid court, the offensive strategy was usually to get the ball into Tony's hands. Jenkins was an outstanding defender.

Others that played with Tony White:
Tyrone Beamon (came in paired with Michael Brooks)
Willie Burton
Dan Federmann
Rob Jones
Kirk Naler
Kevin Woods
Anthony Richardson
Dyron Nix
Elvin Brown
Doug Roth
Mark Griffin

Anytime I think of TN basketball, Tony White and Dyron Nix always come to mind. I remember watching Tony play when I was young and just starting to understand the game. Tony had one of the sweetest and smoothest looking jumpshot I can remember. Happy Bday Tony! And thanks for being a VOL!
