Tony Vitello to SF Giants (Confirmed)

Coaches are not part of the MLB union, they are employed by the team and he would still get paid if a lockout occurs.

This is MLB......the pinnacle of the sport. Even if he take a pay cut the potential pay long-term is greater.
NIL and transfers have turned college sports into a cluster......he would be crazy not to take the job if offered!!!!!!!

Lets 162 games......

No control over roster.....

Sometimes no control over even the day-to-day lineup.....

No MLB experience - player or coach.....

Dealing with actual pros.....

Top of college baseball........

Not crazy to not take the job.....

Still don’t think him being at practice means much. The “decision in 24-72 hours” line from Rosenthal and Passan reads like “whenever the ALCS” is over. Just really hope that is coincidental and he actually is thinking it over.
I mean, you have just as much reason to take the "glass is half full" approach. Information gaps cause many people to assume the worst possible scenario.

In 2024, there were 6 managers making less than $1 Million. 15 Made $1.75 Million or less. Dave Roberts of the Dodgers made $3.75 million. It is just not realistic that Vitello would be offered $5 Million that some folks talk about
This link (The Top 20 Highest-Paid MLB Managers) states Roberts is making $8.1 million per year with his new deal.

That is very fair and true. I guess it just feels odd to not announce he is staying if the decision has been made and it’s back to business as usual. You would think you’d want to clear the air and just move on.

It could be that he’s mostly decided to stay, but Sexton is still negotiating his raise/extension, and so they have to keep the leverage on the table.

It could be that he’s mostly decided to leave, but same deal as above on the SF side…or just waiting for an MLB off-date to announce.

It could be that everything is still on the table, and Sexton is getting best final offers as we speak.

My (extremely uninformed) take is that, if he stays, some things about the way the program operates and is resourced will change. That only makes sense if he turns down a potentially once-in-a-lifetime offer to manage one of MLB's most storied franchises. Given how long the previous contract "update" took to play out (IIRC, the folks at VQ thought the news would come out not long after we won the CWS, and it ended up happening in August), it stands to reason that it might take a bit of time to iron out any details. I don't think it'll be months, obviously, but maybe a couple days.

I dunno. I just think Danny is taking a more expansive view of Tony's importance to the university (in a "rising tide lifts all ships" kind of way), so my feeling is that if Tony leaves, it's really because the allure of managing an MLB team was too much to overcome. I don't think it'll be because we denied a request or shorted him on NIL money.

Bassillio hates Danny cause he’s cut off leaks which affects his livelihood. He wants him out and will poison the fanbase against him if he can. Don’t trust him and yes I know he’s done a lot of good in the community. Can’t blame a guy doing what it takes to put food on the table as long as it’s not illegal.

I guess it could be just part of the deal, but it’d be hard for me to attend practice the last 3 days with the kids I recruited and at the program I literally built from nothing, only to be waiting for tomorrow for the announcement.

Just seems fake and phony and everything against what Tony stands for. All his loyalty talk over the years is at odds with this.

Maybe that’s just how it has to be though.

Well, the alternative—not showing up even though there's been no announcement—would be a sh*t show.

He works 365 days a year now, prob less work and more perks as MLB manager
no control now with transfers....at least players will have contracts
not buying lineup decisions
and they still want him....bet that makes him feel good
better than dealing with college kids and their parents
MLB>College baseball

I don’t disagree. But, Kendall Rogers just tweeted that Tony likes to keep things closely guarded and doesn’t tip his hand (which we know) so I guess it just wouldn’t be that surprising if Tony was operating like it was business as usual when it isn’t.

I think you’re right though. It feels a bit cold to continue practicing with the team if you are planning on leaving them. Hope that’s not the case.

Yep.

I'm hoping it plays out like it did between Dan Hurley and the Lakers. Very similar deal...premier pro franchise wants the current best college level coach, they make a big offer, Hurley continues to hold practices and goes about his business as usual while mulling things over, then eventually tells them no.

I am all Vol. I appreciate CTV, CRB, CJH, and the rest of our coaches, staffs, Administration, professors, and everyone including alumni like me. Either make UT the best or see ya. If we do not have a scorecard with the next ten replacements ready to jump to the Vols and give their all…we need to replace the guy doing our replacements. Replacing staff is a reality. Let’s beat @ Kentucky Sat 6:45, Oklahoma Nov 1 at home, New Mexico State Nov 15 at home, @ Florida Nov 22, and @ Vandy Nov 29. GO BIG ORANGE - VFL!

Thanks for including the profs in your appreciation! I certainly appreciate UT students and alumni!

If Tony is leaving for the MLB because that's his dream and the top of his chosen profession I'm okay with it.
If Tony is looking to leave because there's a riff in the AD department ( rumors at this point) ,that is totally unacceptable. To allow a coach to leave that's taken a program stuck in the mud to a national championship and built one of the strongest names in college baseball then DW can pack his s**t up and head back to UFC
Didn't know he was a mma fighter.

I think that is all who Tony is. IF he is going, he is going to enjoy every minute with his boys that he loves and invested in. He will fight to make sure his guys are taken care of and do his best for them in the future. That is who the man is. I know I have told this before but on the day he was hired at UT, Kirby sent him a text and he replied. In the chaos of the day making speeches and doing interviews, he texted a recruit back. That is Tony.

No offense, but there is zero evidence that Basilio wants Danny White out as AD. He may not like the guy's personality, his money-hungry tactics, or the way he operates the athletic department, but I've never heard him say Tennessee is better off without him, much less he wants him out. You're projecting that on him.
