Tony V and Chancellor Plowman discuss leadership

No accident that all sports are thriving. We all pay attention to the coaches/players, but if Chancelor and AD isn't right, we've seen how it doesn't work. Plowman's depth of questions tells you she's top shelf...leadership from the top matters.

I’ve worked at UT almost 20 years and indeed everything has changed recently under Plowman, and I’ll throw in Boyd as well.

Care to elaborate on specifics?

Well, previously we had constant turnover of leadership, in fighting, lack of cohesion, questionable decision making, etc. As an example that stands out in my mind, the preceding Chancellor was fired via the letter at the link below, in which the system president tore her apart, which is unusual in academics, to say the least. If you are looking for info specifically on the athletic department, just check out the book Decade of Dysfunction by Mark Nagi.

…woof. Didn’t realize it had devolved that far. Regardless of how bad it was, that’s a large amount of dirty laundry to be airing in public.

The scathing letter shows more about DiPietro’s poor leadership and lack of character than Davenport’s. He cites poor communication skills but offers a faculty position in Communications making 75% of her Chancellor salary. What a weak leader DiPietro was… With that said, thank goodness for Randy Boyd and Donde Plowman.

This was what I discerned reading that abomination of a termination notice.

I can’t believe legal and HR approved that letter. Crazy times for sure!

Yeah, I was shocked and embarrassed when I read that letter and it says a lot about him. The only time I met Di Pietro, I was with one of my colleagues, and he takes a look at my buddy’s name tag and says, Your last name ends in a vowel like mine does. 🤣 I was like, ok this is our system president 😑

All this, despite many great public comments and affirmation from those working around her that she was superb in her job.

Don’t ever have an underling screw up a football coaching search at the University of Tennessee or you will encounter this. Anyway, that was the moral of the story for me. It was the ultimate case of covering your butt by Di Pietro because the powers that be wanted blood over the search. My assumptions only.
