SI.com - NCAA Football - ACLU: Bowden 'Church Day' violates rights - Wednesday November 28, 2007 10:43PM
The ball's in their court? Was this lawsuit triggered by a student athlete or was it triggered independently by the ACLU?
GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson coach Tommy Bowden violates the constitutional rights of his players by making them have to opt out if they don't want to go to an annual team visit to a church, a leader of the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union said.
The organization is considering what it should do next, Neil Caesar, vice president of the South Carolina chapter of the ACLU told The Greenville News on Wednesday.
"The ball's in our court," Caesar said. "We just need to figure out what our response is going to be."
The school has stressed the outing is voluntary and has already told Bowden he can no longer used publicly owned team buses to take the players to church, school spokeswoman Cathy Sams said.
