January 2, 1988.........

The 9-2-1 Vols traveled to Atlanta to play 8-3 Indiana in the Peach Bowl. Behind two TD passes by Jeff Francis, the Vols jumped out to a quick 21-3 lead. Indiana rallied in the second half to take a 22-21 lead, but late in the game, the Vols marched down the field and scored when Reggie Cobb bruised his way in for a 9 yrd touchdown. On the ensuing drive for the Hoosier’s, Charles Kimbrough’s interception sealed the Vols victory, 27-22.
Jeff Francis was 20-26 for 225 yrds and 2TDs, while Reggie Cobb had 146 yrds rushing and 2TDs of his own.

January 3, 1970.......

The final “Bert Bell Benefit Bowl” was held at the Orange Bowl in Miami. Following each season from 1960-1969, the NFL held the “Third Place Game.” This was the last year it was held and had FIVE former Tennessee Vols playing. The Dallas Cowboys had Ron Widby, Steve Kiner, and Richmond Flowers, while the LA Rams had Jack Reynolds and Dick Evey. The Rams won the game 31-0.

Last night produced an eerily similar outcome. Again, we narrowly defeated Indiana and gave up 22 points, exactly the same number as we surrendered in the 1988 Peach Bowl.

January 4, 1999.......

I have close family connections with both UT and FSU. This was a fun night at our house.

After a scoreless first quarter, Shawn Bryson caught a short td pass and Dwayne Goodrich returned an interception 54 yrds to give UT a 14-0 lead. “The Rooster” Marcus Outzen lead the ‘Noles back to cut the lead to 14-9 at the half.
The score remained the same until midway through the 4th quarter. Deep in their own territory, Tee Martin hit Peerless Price on a 79 yrd TD to extend the lead. Jeff Hall would add a FG to make the score 23-9. FSU would cut the lead to 23-16, but the Vols Defense held and gave UT their first consensus National Championship since 1951.
The ‘Noles Defense held Tennessee’s running game in check, but Martin and Price made huge plays all night. Martin finished with 279 yrds and Price had 199 yrds receiving and was named MVP.

I hope everyone enjoyed the thread. I had a lot of fun looking back over the decades of Tennessee Football and finding photos of the older games. I'm a definite history buff and learned some things I didn't know about Vols history.

It's never too early to start thinking about the 2020 season, so a countdown will start tomorrow! GBO and Go Peay!:cool:

Well done and thank you! You could always go start one in the basketball forum if you get bored. Lots of wonderful games there to reflect on. With my favorite being March 5, 1977 in Stokely
