Today in Tennessee football history..........

December 18, 1965.......

The Vols made their first Bowl game since 1957 a memorable one. In a downpour, Dewey Warren ran for 2TDs and threw for 1TD in UT’s 27-6 victory over Tulsa in the Bluebonnet Bowl at Rice Stadium. Stan Mitchell scored the last td on an 11 yrd run. Tulsa threw for 250 yrds, but had 4 interceptions and 3 fumbles in the rain. The Vols finished 8-1-2 and ranked #7.

That was the first Tennessee game that I vaguely remember watching. Tulsa set all kinds of NCAA passing records that year. Bill Anderson completed 296 of 509 passes in only 10 games, which did not count the bowl game, for 3464 yards and 30 touchdowns. Howard Twilley was his primary receiver and shattered single-season records with 134 receptions for 1,779 yards and 16 touchdowns. 1965 Tulsa Golden Hurricane Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

December 20, 1971..........

Tennessee played Arkansas for the first time since 1907 in the Liberty Bowl. Arkansas dominated time of possession and total yards, but only held a 13-7 lead in the 4th quarter. A field goal nullified by a penalty, gave UT hope. A series later, the Vols recovered a fumble and marched down the field. After a 22 yrd pass from Jim Maxwell to Gary Theiler to the 19, the stage was set for the “Crossville Comet,” Curt Watson, to score on a 17 yrd TD to tie the score. Eddie Hunts PAT gave the Vols a 14-13 lead. On the next possession, Eddie Brown intercepted a pass to seal the victory. The 10-2 Vols finished #9 in the country.

Here's a great Tennessee Bowl Game of the Past. 7-3 Tennessee played 8-2 Texas A&M in the 1957 Gator Bowl. Tennessee shut down Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow and came away with a 3-0 win . Tennessee coached by Bowden Wyatt finished 1957 8-3 while Texas A&M coached by Bear Bryant in his last season at Texas A&M finished 1957 with an 8-3 record.

Ah, yes, another delightful pre-Alabama coaching loss to Tennessee for Bear Bryant. If I calculate correctly, he was 1-6-2 vs. the Big Orange before returning to his alma mater.

About that fumble....

December 21, 2008.......(no UT game)

Jamal Lewis needed 63 yrds rushing vs the Cincinnati Bengals to rush for 10,000 career yrds. In the third quarter, Lewis ran for 8 yrds to become the 24th player in NFL history to accomplish the feat. As a rookie, he helped Baltimore to the Super Bowl and ran for 103 yrds and a TD in the victory over the Giants. In 2003, Lewis ran for 295 yrds vs Cleveland and finished the season with 2,066 Yrds. Lewis finished his career with 10,607 yrds and 58 TDs rushing and 1,879 receiving yrds and 4 TDs.

First bowl game of my lifetime. I was a month old.
I got to see this game because of my mom lol i turned 17 in September and enlisted in the Marine Corps , but mom wouldn't sign my enlistment papers unless i waited until after christmas to leave. Made me mad but I had to wait and ended up seeing this game because of that. Thanks mom , and always think of the old adage about being careful what you wish for when I think about this game .

December 22, 1984.........

Unfortunately, the ‘84 Sun Bowl goes down as one of the worst defeats in Vols history. After a couple of Reviez kicks, a Johnny Jones TD, and a Tim McGee td reception, UT held a 21-0 at the half. Frank Reich and Maryland stormed back to score 22 straight points to take a 1 pt lead. Pete Panuska would return a kickoff 100 yrds to give Tennessee a lead, but Maryland would score again to defeat the Vols 28-27.

On a positive note: The returning players seemed to use this loss as motivation, as we all know, '85 was a special season!

As good a quarterback as Tony Robinson was, his injury truly galvanized the ’85 team.

The defense became an all-but-impenetrable wall, surrendering only 34 points in the last seven games, including their masterful performance against Miami in the ’86 Sugar Bowl. To this day, I consider that game to be the most inspired 60-minute performance by a Tennessee football team in 52 years of following Big Orange pigskinery.

I dunno, that '85 win over Auburn ("Where's Bo?") has to be up there. Also the '95 Bama game.

VFL’s Peyton Manning and Arian Foster were named to the AFC Pro-Bowl Team.

For the Houston Texans running back, it was Foster’s 4th trip to the Pro Bowl. He would finish the season with 1,246 yrds rushing and 8 TDs, along with 327 receiving yrds and 5 TDs.

It was Manning’s 14th trip to the Pro Bowl. The Broncos QB finished the season with 4,727 yrds and 39 TDs. In week 7, Manning became the all time leader in passing TDs with his 507th, passing Brett Favre.

The ’85 victory over then no. 1-ranked Auburn was, indeed, very impressive but, if memory serves me correctly, we surrendered some garbage points in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, the defense NEVER backed off the gas pedal for a second against Miami.

December 24, 1976.........(slow day in UT history)

Joe Gallagher was the only Vol to play in the annual Blue-Gray All Star Game. He helped the Gray team win 31-10.

Gallagher was a four year starter for the Vols, at three different positions (defensive tackle, tackle, and guard). Joe was named UT’s Most Valuable Lineman in 1976. He became a legendary coach at Haverford High, PA.
