Today in Tennessee football history..........

Here's another Tennessee-Vanderbilt game of the past. On November 30th 1974 6-3-1 Tennessee coached by Bill Battle traveled to Dudley Field in Nashville to take on 7-2-1 Vanderbilt coached by Steve Sloan. Condredge Holloway guided Tennessee back to a 21-21 pulse pounding tie with Vanderbilt. 1974 Tennessee finished 7-3-2 and ranked #20 while Vanderbilt finished 7-3-2.

The last game played at Neyland Stadium on Artificial Turf saw the Vols defeat Vandy 62-14. James Stewart ran for 91 yrds and scored 3TDs and Charlie Garner ran for 151 yrds and a score. On Defense, John Emery had 9 tackles and Scott Gaylon had 8 tackles and 2 for loss.

Whit Taylor threw for the second most yrds in SEC history, but it wasn’t enough, as UT defeated Vandy 38-34 in Knoxville. James Berry rushed for 102 yrds, Steve Alatorre had 10 completions for 319 yrds and 2 TDs, and Willie Gault had 4 receptions for 219 yrds including an 80 yrd TD. After two blowout losses to start the year, the Vols finished 7-4 and went to the Garden State Bowl.

Forgive me, I'm a day late with this post. In 1976, Peabody College was not yet part of Vanderbilt University, though all music education majors were conscripted to play in the Vanderbilt band. So it was on November 27, 1976. My brother and his Phi Mu Alpha brothers were doing their duty for Vandy one more time. None of the Peabody conscripts were enthusiastic about this. Knowing me to be a UT student, they snuck me into the stadium with the band. My brother put me on the end of his row. The Vols won, 13-10. When I loudly cheered the Vols' TD, none of the band members around me were particularly perturbed.

Heh. At one point in the 70s "Andy" was sponsoring bumper stickers proclaiming that "Vanderbilt is THE University of Tennessee." CharterVol immediately drew one up that said "Peabody is THE Vanderbilt University."

November 29, 1952........

In General Neyland’s last regular season game, UT traveled to Nashville to play bitter rival Vandy. Pat Olesiak scored 3 TDs and passed for 2 more scores. Doug Atkins returned an interception for a touchdown as the Vols destroyed Vandy 46-0. It was the largest defeat of a Vanderbilt football team in history. Tennessee’s Defense allowed only 13 yrds of offense for the day. The win would even the series record at 21 wins apiece.

For the first, and only time in school history, three backs had over 100 yrds rushing. James Stewart had 145 and 2 TDs, Aaron Hayden had 115, and Mose Phillips had 107. Craig Faulkner had 8 receptions for 107 yrds and a touchdown from backup Heath Shuler. The Vols Defense sacked Vandy’s qb 7 times to set a school record of 39 on the year. The 45-0 win was the largest margin of victory over Vanderbilt since 1952.

Vandy's Whit Taylor and Tennessee's Steve Alatorre put on a great offensive show. Willie Gault was fantastic that day. I think that was the game that John Ward said on the radio that Gault was running all the way to the state capital.

The thing I remember most about that game was the drive home afterward on I-40. I don't remember the speedometer on my dad's car dropping below 80 until we got to Nashville. My mom was scared to death until we got on I-24. 😨😄

In honor of it being Vanderbilt week here's a Tennessee-Vanderbilt game of the past. On November 30th 1985 #10 ranked 7-1-2 Tennessee hosted 3-6-1 Vanderbilt in Neyland Stadium. Tennessee's defense completely dominated and they crushed Vanderbilt 30-0 winning the SEC Championship. Tennessee coached by Johnny Majors finished 1985 9-1-2 and ranked #4 while Vanderbilt coached by Watson Brown finished 1985 3-7-1.

I was at this game. I traveled back from Memphis late the night before where my high school team had lost by 2 in the AA semi finals. Wish I had had a chance to try a game winning FG.

Got up early the next AM and left home in Hendersonville with 2 of my classmates and headed to Knoxville. Got in with student tickets my older UT sister had gotten for us. Good times beating Vandy for the SEC championship.

Went to Gatlinburg night after the game to stay for the night.

Fun times.

Jimmy Streater returned from injury to help lead UT to a 31-10 victory over Vanderbilt. Down 10-0 at the half, Streater hit Anthony Hancock for TDs of 41 and 85 yards and Roland James returned a punt 89 yrds to open the floodgates. Streater would set the UT record for career yards with 3,433. Hancock finished with 163 yrds receiving for the day.

Haskel Stanback ran for 143 yrds and 3 TDs in the Vols 30-10 victory over the host Commodores. Stanback broke Hank Lauricella’s single season rushing record with 890 yrds. Condredge Holloway had another stellar game passing and rushing for a touchdown.

Who did you play for and what Memphis school did you lose to in the AA semis?

I kicked for Goodpasture. Lost to Memphis University School (Andy McCarroll who went to vandy was on their team). They beat Knoxville Austin East and Leroy Thompson (Penn State got him then he was drafted by the Steelers) in the state finals.

20,000 fans jammed in to Crump Stadium in Memphis to see the Vols play Ole Miss. Pappy Wallen scored, Bill Luttrell blocked a punt , and “Bad News” Cafego ran wild, but it was the defense that stole the show. The Vols D held Southern scoring leader Parker Hall at bay all game, as UT shutout the Rebs 47-0.

That was a very good Ole Miss team they finished 9-2 in 1938. That shows how great the 1938 Tennessee football team was!

My late grandmother was at UT then. She was good friends with Cafego. She and some sorority sisters took a train to the Rose Bowl after the '39 season. She loved talking about those yrs.

I remember the Lindsey Nelson story about him taking a ride with someone to the Rose Bowl and having to hitch hike back to Tennessee:D

Thank you all for sharing your stories as they are a joy to read.

Does anyone other than me feel old? It was over 25 yrs ago when I graduated from UT and Peyton was a freshman. Greet memories.

UT football is always fun to discuss, even when we have a poor season. We all get angry when we lose but sad when the season ends.
Go Vols!
