On November 8th 1997 #7 Tennessee smoked #25 Southern Mississippi 44-20 with a strong performance by Peyton Manning. Tennessee coached by Phil Fulmer finished 1997 11-2 and ranked #8 while Southern Miss coached by Jeff Bower finished 9-3 ranked #19.

November 8, 2003.......

28 wins in a row, a 14 pt favorite, and a “soldier,” awaited the Vols at The Orange Bowl in Miami. The Vols could only muster 170 yrds of offense, but the defense forced 4 Hurricane turnovers in UT’s 10-6 victory over Miami. On 4th and goal from the two, Fulmer called an end-around to Derrick Tinsley, who scored the game’s only TD in the 2nd quarter. The defense held, thanks to a fumble recovery on a punt return late in the game.

Brock Berlin and Kellen Winslow, Jr still have nightmares over the defeat..........

The 24 point comeback was the largest in Notre Dame Stadium history.

After one of the worst losses in school history to Rutgers, the Vols hosted #13 Notre Dame, who made their first visit to Knoxville. Jimmy Streater showed the 86,497 fans (school record at the time) a combination of fluent running and passing during the first half that allowed UT to score 30 pts. Jeff Olszewski lead the team in the second half after Streater’ knee injury, but the star of the day was Hubert Simpson. When Simpson signed with the Vols, he said, “I heard Tennessee doesn’t have a fullback. They do now.” The bruising fullback had 117 yrds and 4 TDs in the 40-18 Vols victory.

As I recall, Coach Majors dismissed Mr. Simpson from the team just weeks before the ‘80 season opener against eventual National Champion, Georgia. OMO, but I’ve always thought they don’t beat us if we have Simpson.
Oh well.

The Citadel came to Knoxville. George Cafago threw a Touchdown to Ed Cifers for the first score, and then seriously injured his knee. With the All-American out, the Vols relied on Pappy Joe Wallen, William Foster, Johnny Butler, and Emil Hurst and easily won 34-0.

November 12, 1955.......

41,000 Homecoming fans in Gainesville, watched the Vols shutout the UF 20-0. Gainesville native son, Tommy Bronson led the Vols with 74 yrds on 9 carries and a Touchdown. Johnny Majors scored and Edd Cantrell returned an interception 23 yrds for a td. In total, the Vols forced 7 Gator turnovers, including Lon Herzburn’s two ints.

November 13, 1982.........

After three consecutive losses in Jackson, the Vols finally beat Ole Miss there, 30-17. The Vols rushed for 250 yrds and forced 3 Rebel turnovers. Chuck Coleman ran for 134 yrds and 2TDs and Doug Furnas ran for 94 yrds and a touchdown. Fuad Reviez set the SEC single season record for field goals in a season with his 21st, 22nd, and 23rd.

November 14, 1998........

Way too simple..........

The #10 Arkansas Razorbacks came to Knoxville to face the #1 ranked Vols. Arkansas raced out to a 21-10 halftime lead, that stunned the 106,000 fans. Traded field goals and a Tee Martin td run made the score 24-20.

For twelve minutes, neither team could score. Deon Grant blocked a FG attempt, but UT couldn’t muster points. With 2:54 seconds left, Arkansas attempted a punt, but a high snap led to a safety. Down two, UT couldn’t move the ball and turned the ball over on downs with less than 2 minuets left. Then.....the miracle happened. Clint Stoerner stumbled, then laid the ball on the ground, allowing Billy Ratliff to recover the ball on the Hogs 43 yrd line. Travis Henry took over, running 5 straight times and scoring with 31 seconds left, giving the Vols a 28-24 victory. Henry finished with 32 carries for 197 yrds and 1 huge touchdown!

November 15, 1986.......

The Vols traveled to Jackson to face the Rebels in front of 35,000. At 3-5, and playing the #20 team in the country, a winning season and bowl game looked bleak. But, UT played their most complete game of the season. Trailing 10-9 with about 12 minuets left, Jeff Francis hit Joey Clinkscales on a 38 yrd TD. On the next Rebel play, Terry McDaniel intercepted an Ole Miss pass at midfield. Nine plays later, William Howard scored from the three to secure the 22-10 victory. Howard’s TD was the first rushing touchdown Ole Miss had given up in 18 quarters. The Vols finished with a 7-5 record and a Liberty Bowl win.

November 16, 1968.........

Coming off a bitter loss, the Vols hosted Ole Miss. The 31-0 victory offered several great performances. Lester McClain’s two TDs, the 16 carry 122 yards of Richard Pickens, or the two touchdowns that Bubba Wyche tossed in a 59 second span could be game MVP. But, Steve Kiner stole the show. He had 12 tackles and two of the Vols seven interceptions for the game. All that, with a broken wrist.

November 17, 1951........

During the National Championship season of 1951, the Vols had two of the best players in school history: Hank Lauricella and Doug Adkins. Adkins had one of his greatest games of his career (an interception and “numerous” tackles for loss) vs Ole Miss and Lauricella had a 24 yrd TD to enter the 1000 yrd club. Andy Kozar had 2TDs and Dick Ernsberger had a 53 yrd touchdown run in the 46-21 victory in Oxford

November 18, 1978.......

Down 17-7 at halftime, the Homecoming crowd in Knoxville assumed another loss. But, the Vols came out in the second half and scored 34 unanswered points to blow out Ole Miss 41-17. Hubert Simpson ran for 137 yrds and Kelsey Finch scored 2TDs. Roland James had two interceptions and went 90 yrds for a touchdown with the second one. Simpson was named UPI Southeast player of the week.

Tennessee coached by General Neyland finished 1939 with a 10-1 record and ranked #2 while Vanderbilt coached by Ray Morrison finished 1939 with a 2-7-1 record. Bear Bryant was an assistant coach on the 1939 Vanderbilt team.

On November 18th 1944 #17 Tennessee won 27-14 over Temple at Homecoming at Shields-Watkins Field. Tennessee coached by John Barnhill finished 1944 with a 7-1-1 record ranked #12 while Temple coached by Ray Morrison finished 1944 with a 2-4-2 record.

Good mojo for Saturday.

In his last home game as a Vol, Josh Dobbs had a game to remember. Dobbs had 223 yrds passing and 3 TDs and rushed for 190 yrds on 10 carries and 2 more touchdowns. John Kelly added 101 rushing yrds as well. Alvin Kamara and Jauan Jennings each had 2 TDs in the Vols 63-37 victory over Missouri.
