Opening game of the season saw the #10 Vols struggle against New Mexico in Jeff Francis’ first start. With the game in jeopardy, Charles Davis picked off Bill Rucker’s pass and returned it 55 yrds for a TD, helping secure the 35-21 victory!

Game two of the season brought UCLA to Knoxville. Big plays were the norm as long passes, punt returns, and interceptions went for TDs. Leading by 8 with about 6 minuets left, Peyton dropped back and faked a quick pass to the right. Paul Guidry (Bruin cb) took the bait as Joey Kent breezed by him and ran under Manning’s pass for a 53 yrd touchdown giving the Vols a 35-20 victory in front of a then record crowd of 106,297. Manning threw for 288 yrds and 2TDs and ran for 2TDs.

I debated whether to start it or not after yesterday, but figured I might as well relive past /positive memories.
I'll do the best I can to bring at least a quick smile to those who read it each day......

Sorry @peaygolf, just saw this thread. I don’t venture into the ff much. Thank you for starting it. It’s sure to bring a smile on any Vol fan’s face, it has mine. We certainly need it.

At Grant Field in Atlanta, Condrege Holloway became the first black quarterback to start a game in SEC history. His dazzling scrambling and deft passing were on display in front of a national ABC TV audience. Early in the game, Holloway threw a pick in the flat. Instinctively, he chased down the Tech player and made a TD saving tackle at the 6 yrd line. The defense would hold Tech to their only points in the Vols 34-3 victory. Holloway later said it was the greatest play of his entire career.

Tony Robinson was one of my favorites to watch. When is TN going to finally realize that a dual threat QB is what it takes in the SEC. They are much harder to cover. And before someone says it, JG is NOT a dual threat. Hell my grandson could bring him down.

I didn't remember Tony Robinson as a dual threat when he played and 195 yards for a career is pretty pedestrian considering he threw for 17 times as many yards. Heath Shuler by comparison had 395 yards rushing and threw for more than 10 times more yards. JMO, but the reason the qb's don't run as much anymore can be attributed to what happened to T-Rob when he ran the ball. Career ending knee injury.

TR "could" run, but didn't....because he had a line that could block the Titans DLine. He was (IMO) the most talented QB to ever wear Orange.

My friends in Tallahassee are still pissed he got away.

Tennessee hosted Iowa State for the first and only meeting in history. Down by 1 point with about 5 minuets left, Carlton Peoples jumped on a Cyclone fumble at the 43 yrd line. Unable to get a first down, Coach Majors called on Fuad Reveiz yet again. His third field goal of the day, from 52 yards, was the game winner, as the defense held on for a 23-21 victory.
