On this day in 1847, General Winfield Scott captured Veracruz during the Mexican-American War.
After a 20 day siege including gunboat bombardments, they surrendered, setting the state for a full-scale invasion of Mexico.
During the Civil War, Lincoln asked Scott why he had captured Mexico City so quickly with a small force, while Union armies struggled against Richmond.
Scott: "The men who took us into Mexico City are the same men who are keeping us out of Richmond."
