2015 NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft makes closest approach to Pluto, coming within 13,000 km of the surface.
for reference, the moon is almost 380,000 kms away. so almost 30x closer than the moon is to us.

by the time it passed Pluto it was going over 50,000 km/hr. so it would have taken it about 15 minutes to hit Pluto. it would have taken somewhere around 4 to 5 hours for us to even get a message to New Horizon, far far too late to have fixed the course.
