It's probably a long story somewhere in here. Maybe a trucker ran over Tim's toe one day.

I'm not a full fledged trucker but I know some.

:)

The old school boys were the real deal. These guys coming out of truck driving schools are idiots. All you have to have is a pulse.

Yeah, I miss those guys. But alas the Feds and the police have ran most of them off making the roads even more dangerous.

Just got back home to W.TN from Missouri yesterday & the way they drive, including the truckers, is asinine & I wish all would stay off the road there when I go.

Slight derail here- they are looking to force truckers to carry obamacare and they are changing the DOT physicals to yearly instead of once every two years. DOT cops are getting out of hand too.

Ok- back on topic.

Still OT-

If you use a cpap machine you'll only get a 30 day medical. Already doing it in VA from what I hear.

Damn. Got a buddy doing the test next week. He has to take the test because he has a neck bigger than 17". His dot card wS only good for three months until he takes the test.

He's a 27 year country boy. Good shape. Healthy. Just corn feed.

Got to have jobs for the immigrants.

DOT has been hell here for 5-6 years, on secondary routes too, not just big roads.

Those SOB's could find a way to red tag a brand new truck and trailer if they wanted to

They just started hitting the secondary roads here as of late. Same dot cop has gotten me twice in six months on a seat belt violation. The sob climbs all the way up in the cab with me. I don't think he like my power T on the bug deflector and is profiling me. Lol

I'm still waiting on you to answer that for me. I've asked specifically about the education requirements, and you seem to want to refuse to answer with anything other than "you don't know what your talking about, I done this, this, and this".

For a basic patrol officer, entry level, before being accepted in the academy:

At a minimum, a 4-year University degree in criminal justice or related field should be required before one is even considered.

A background check that includes criminal history, finances and drug use. I wouldn't be opposed to a limited scope polygraph as well. Spot checks on finances and drug tests.

A minimum IQ that fits into at least the top quartile of the population. No exceptions.

Annual physical fitness re-qualification and certification.

Initial Psychiatric Exams and mental health assessment. Annual ones every year thereafter.

For starters...these would be basic standards nation-wide. Specific departments can elevate certain specific criteria.

I think that would drastically improve the public service we are paying for. And don't start with the how would we pay for those higher qualifications. Its public service. Nobody is forcing them to do it and private sector jobs are there.

The following is my experience over the past 5 years. I manage a security department at a high tech facility and often get young veterans coming out of military law enforcement assigned to my site. They come here while they wait for their application to the state police academy, or potentially to get hired by a local department. Having sent about a dozen through the process here is what I've seen. All of this is purely anecdotal, I can't provide any hard proof so take it for what it is worth.

Degrees: In order to get accepted your file has to stand out. They are definately looking for either military training or advanced schooling already. I haven't seen anyone make the cut without at least an Associates degree, most had more than that. You definitely won't get promoted without more.

IQ tests: These are bracketed now. You must fall within something like the 75-85 percentile, so not too dumb but also not too smart.

Background checks are already done. Unfortunately, even juvenile records can prevent someone from being selected. This means a reformed thug (i.e. someone with street smarts who grew up and also got morals) would never get selected these days.

Psychiatric exams are also done, extensively. But they filter out creativity, individualism, people who see things in shades of gray. The exams select for good vs bad, right vs wrong, orders are good, discretion is bad types of personalities.

Fitness tests are required as well. The biggest challenge seems to be the verticle jump test as it weeds out a lot of people. Not sure why a police officer would have to be able to jump--maybe it is just testing to see if they can handle the 40 lbs belt they have to carry? The local PDs require annual fitness tests as do many (but not all) sherrif departments. (Sherrifs and Police are different in Pennsylvania)

Would you get time for killing your neighbor's cows? I've never heard of it, but I assume that is worthy of some jail time.

Eat the evidence.

ETA: Bribe responding cops with portions of said evidence. I'm sure they'd like a good hanger steak and porterhouse as well.
