To Protect and to Serve...

No you did a good job. Well done. I only stated my experience when you poked your chest out and acted like an expert because you're "an ICU nurse" and started calling names stating I didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

That was not my intentions I promise. I am reminded on a daily basis how incredibly far from an expert I am. I only mentioned it to provide some context into how I see almost daily how untrue your original statement is.

I'm not really sure what all happened so I'm merely speculating here. He probably became extremely hypercapnic (increased serum CO2) due to poor gas exchange as a result of inadequate ventilation (the chokehold).

That's probably when all his comorbidities came into the picture. First off, he probably lives in the land of high CO2 to begin with. Also once the chokehold was released, you and I would've instantly began compensating and probably been just fine. Not him though. Those crappy lungs and that huge belly just won't allow him to breathe like he needs to in order to compensate. In fact, he just continues to get worse. He needs to be intubated to get that CO2 back to its normal level of just really high instead of the insanely high that it is at that moment.

Correcting the acute problem could be achieved in as little as 12 to 24 hours on the ventilator. Now weaning him off the ventilator may have been a challenge and possibly taken much longer, but that's a different story. The point is that he would've survived with timely intubation and mechanical ventilation.

He probably died within a couple of hours and certainly never regained consciousness.

Looks like the MD that wrote this article agrees with you.....

Articles: A Medical Perspective on the Garner Tragedy
He seems to think the weight of the officers on Gsrner was more devastating than the chokehold.

Yes, and it's obvious he couldn't. But, the reason he could not breathe enough to sustain life can, and is, tied directly to his poor health and obesity. Arguing that he died solely because of one reason is not factual, a multitude of things are cited in the report.

I feel like we had a thread for this debate some time ago.

This is such a copout. If they break an old man's hip they can't say "he was old." if they crush a woman they can't say "she was frail".

If Garner choked a fat cop out and the cop died, I'm sure you would have completely different opinion about cause of death.

Fair enough...this link was the case I was talking about which gives a bit more information than the one the other poster linked.

Coconut Creek Police Break Silence On In Custody Death « CBS Miami

It only took the cops 2 weeks. Just enough time to make up an explanation and coordinate stories.

The fact that they cited the health care privacy act so they don't have to admit somebody is dead tells me that when they do talk, I should be skeptical.

I would guess excited delirium, but I'll wait for the official report.

Well, yes and no. But, when circumstances/?conditions exist they exist. How is it an excuse when actual facts are cited.

And if an officer with similar health issues died as a result of physical exertion I would not expect any different outcomes.

If the cop gets choked and dies is the assailant not a cop killer? Would you want him to go to jail for assault, manslaughter, or murder?

This is also perfect evidence for that video that was posted a while back about cops being cowards.

Six cops surrounding one handicap man. One of the six shove the man out of his wheelchair onto the concrete over an accident. Do any of the other five have even a little bit of a spine and defend this man?

Hell no…

There's no doubt that the one who pushed the man out of the wheelchair is a sociopathic douche bag. But I'm serious… I have a bigger problem with the five that stood around and didn't do anything about it.

I have this mysterious condition that makes me respond to gunshots with bleeding and death

Let's say you have a line of 100 dominoes. Somebody walks up barely taps the first one, it tips over, and creates a chain reaction in which the other 99 fall.

Tim… Are you honestly going to look at that situation and take the stance: Well, all he did was tap that first domino. He didn't really mess with the other 99 so I don't see why he should be held accountable for them falling over?

I get your point on the old man and woman, but I bet they had no idea a morbidly obese man was so susceptible to suffocation.
