Man, these are the kinds of players that we need. I'm really pumped @ HT signing with us.

What on earth must be going thru the minds of USC, Cal, Stanford and UCLA fans, when they see this kind of player go across country to a 5-7 team? USC had a relatively bad recruiting year and UCLA with probably the top name from the 18' coaching carousel did not clean house out there.

Glad he's here and God help Bob Kessling. LOL.

USC and UCLA are the ones who are the most upset. Stanford and Cal do not and never have recruited at a high level nationally due to the academic requirements.

Of the top 20 rated players in California, only 2 went to USC. One went to UCLA. Six left the West altogether. Seven went to either Oregon or Washington. Texas got just as many players out of the top 20 as USC did. Pretty amazing.

They are thinking we paid him, just like we think about Auburn and others taking recruits lol

Donald sure was exciting to watch in high school. I hated to see it go down hill after that.

Even worse is knowing he got Willis's scholly and Willis cried all the way home because he didnt get an offer and ended up at miss

That's mind boggling really. Chip Kelly should have been expected to rack up this cycle I would think. Especially w USC's mess. Thanks for the breakdown. I heard it was bad. But, wow.

The thing about Kelly is that he's never recruited at an elite level. Even at Oregon. He took over a program that was in solid shape and took it to the next level. He was there 4 years and they finished #11, #3, #4, and #2 in the AP Poll. That didn't translate to top 5 recruiting classes though. His recruiting classes were ranked 30th, 12th, 12th, and 14th respectively. He never pulled a class ranked #1 in the Pac 12; USC consistently out-recruited him and in some years Stanford or UCLA did. He had good recruiting classes at Oregon, especially by their standards, but they weren't elite despite being an elite program at that time.

At the time, he had something of a reputation as a "do more with less" guy - a lot of the guys he coached turned into great players, but many weren't elite recruits (like Mariota or Darron Thomas).

I knew he didn't push the recruiting rankings button too much back then. But, I feel that some of that was due to him looking for "system guys" for the spread. Speed, agility, and endurance taking a higher value there. And power and strength being more in line with the "player ratings". Also, getting talent a bit farther north geographically was a hinderance. Next state over can be a lot farther than here in the south.

That being said, when he went to UCLA, I expected to see him hit way up into the top 10 with USC's woes and UCLA's "decent" condition. We'll see what happens on the field I guess.

I don't recall all that but I bet Willis wouldn't change a thing after the career he had. I watched them both in High School. 2 sights to see
