The Scout on Malik Howard

Volquest caught with Oak Ridge High School Head Coach Derek Rang to get his thoughts on Howard.

“I think from the tight end position, number one, he has elite positional size. He checks every box from a standpoint of blocking technique and running routes. I think he has elite ball skills,” Rang said of what makes Howard stand out. “He can really make contested catches. He can do the intermediate routes down the field, and there is really nothing he can’t do from that position. He is just a phenomenal athlete. I think when you look at everything from the football perspective, on the field and off the field, he does check every box. When you coach somebody like him, who checks every box and is a great kid as a national recruit, it just obviously makes it very enjoyable. I think when everybody watches him, they see that he can catch the ball and run fast, but I think people miss the boat on the fact that he is over 230 pounds and blocks it really well.”

“Some of these tight ends that are recruits do maybe one skill very well, but he can do it all at the high school level, and he works on it all,” Rang added. “I think it is a big deal to have a kid that will block inline and do kick-out blocks, but then he will also be able to run the route tree. The tight has to do a thousand different things, and he can do them all. I don’t think there is anyone else in the country at the high school level who is being asked to do what he is asked to do in terms of everything that position entails. I think that is what makes him so special.”

What does Howard’s commitment mean for Tennessee?

This is another signature recruiting win for Alec Abeln, who continues to land his top target on the recruiting trail for the Vols. Howard has been the guy at the position for Tennessee for months, and they were able to outlast strong pushes from multiple national powers, including Notre Dame most recently. Howard adds another layer to an already strong tight end room that continues to show plenty of evolution inside of Tennessee’s offense.

Not only did Abeln and the Vols land their top target at the position, but they also kept one of the top local prospects in recent years inside the state borders.

Anyone hear what he said about peer recruiting in the AP interview?

he’s gonna flip Simon. book it.
LONG way till signing day. Wouldn’t be surprised if Simon and/or Chandler end up Vols when pen meets paper.

If DGG jumps in the boat, it will create a ton of momentum in-state that will be hard to pass on for the guys committed elsewhere.
