'27 TN RB Asa Barnes (Tennessee commit)

We almost got Cadillac, Houston, Davis, and Tinsley in that class. All were top 10 RBs in America. We ended up with 3 of the 4, but the one we missed turned out to be the best.
I always thought Tinsley wasn’t utilized to maximize his talents. His end around against the U won that game for us. Thanks for reminding me about him being in that class also…crazy group of RB’s.

Yep. Barnes can redshirt and put a year between himself and DGG....who will only stay 3 years anyway. Which would mean Barnes would have his junior and senior ayears without DGG on the roster as likely s RB1. Love to grab this kid because he is quite talented as well. I give him mucho credit if he signs here in the same class as DGG. Takes a strong minded and confident young man to do so IMO. GBO

I wouldn’t be surprised if Asa and DGG have talked. If he and his family are supposedly concerned about too much wear and tear on his body, there’s going to be plenty of carries for everyone.

DGG and Asa may have this worked out. Asa announcing one week after DGG seems orchestrated. Then again it could be my conspiracy theorist mind at work..

Pretty clear that we’ve used 2 backs every season so Asa wouldn’t be deterred:
Evans/Small
Small/Wright
Wright/Sampson
Sampson/Bishop
Bishop/Thomas,Lewis

Redshirts are no longer a thing with the 5 for 5 ruling

Right. Being the “workhorse” isn’t really a thing anymore. Nor is it desirable. Just about every school gives 2 RBs meaningful snaps (sometimes 3, as UT did 21-23 & 25). When Ohio State won the natty in 24, Henderson and Judkins were sharing snaps.

These kids understand that RBs have a shelf life. They don’t want to be worn down before getting to the NFL.

Heupel gives them real snaps too. Not some garbage time 2nd half clean-up duty.

There were a lot of times where we had the 2nd or 3rd guy in when a lot of coaches would've ran #1 only.

Some other good duos since then...
2001: Cedric Houston and Jabari Davis
2005: Lamarcus Coker and Montario Hardesty
2015: Alvin Kamara and John Kelly
You could even add Derrick Tinsley in that 2001 class. He was a top 8 RB recruit that year. Then we added Riggs in 2002. That was a helluva RB room.

It’s too bad Davis didn’t turn out to be what he was purported to be as a recruit. He was ranked #2 in the nation behind Kevin Jones, who went to VT. I was so excited about Davis, but he turned out to be just a short yardage specialist.
