In a word, yes.

Coach Martin got the system from Gene Keady at Purdue. Coach Keady's coaching tree includes the following people.

Bruce Weber @ Kansas State
Steve Lavin @ Villanova

Kansas State is the team that plays the most like Tennessee.

Purdue under Matt Painter did not have a winning record this year.

Gene Keady learned the system while working as an assistant at Arkansas for Eddie Sutton. Eddie Sutton credits most of his basketball knowledge to Henry Iba at Oklahoma State. Eddie's son Scott Sutton is the HC at Oral Roberts.

KSU plays similar tough no-gamble man to man defense. Offensively, they run a really good looking motion, which UT has gone away from.

The run and gun is fun to watch with some pressing D, aka CBP, but when it come to the NCAA Tourney you can get deeper if you play strong D and can take care of the ball, shoot Free throws is the key to making a run...Remember Butler 2 years made the final game..(by the way Matt Howard is from my home town and I know the family well) in a row play relentless D with good guard play and could hit the FT...aka CCM wants to be here.

I'm obviously not comparing the two from a talent perspective, but when I watch this team I see similarities to how the Memphis Grizzlies played under Lionel Hollins, particularly during their deep playoff run. The style definitely feels like Grit-n-Grind.
