Titans, Jeff Fisher parting ways ?

The point was they've done as much as Fisher did with the Titans - not that they did more. It points out how Fisher has not done much with the Titans.

Yes, the Pats have talent, but it is talent the coach and management found and developed. Brady was a 6th round draft pick. At the time he took over for Bledsoe, he was no more of a name than Rusty, Rusty! Smith. All NFL players are talented. The great coaches know how to make a talented group of individuals gel and stand out.

I'd like you to break down the exact line of logic that has you thinking that Raheem Morris and John Harbaugh have accomplished the same as head coaches as Jeff Fisher. Harbaugh has never led team that won its division, and Morris has never even coached a playoff game. In what way is that comparable to Fisher's 3 division titles, 6 playoff appearances and trip to the Super Bowl, all while coaching for one of the cheapest organizations in the NFL?

Compare them at the same point of each's career, and you'll have you're answer.

You just said earlier that they had accomplished as much as Jeff Fisher. You didn't say anything about comparing at a certain point in their careers. For the record, Raheem Morris has accomplished as much as an NFL coach as the likes of Josh McDaniels, Jim Zorn, Romeo Crennel, Steve Spurrier and Bobby Petrino, nothing.

That wasn't the question

It is when you are evaluating rather Fisher should stay with the Titans. He has not accomplished what great coaches have such as Parcells, Jimmy Johnshon, Cowher, Tomlin, and so on; but if you compare newer coaches to what Fisher did in their time span, Fisher has accomplished the same. Fisher was the longest tenured coach in the NFL, and he still had not accomplished what the elite coaches do. It was time to move on, because many young coaches are doing what Fisher has done while at the Titans.

If it ain't broke, don't fixe it. Guess what, it was broke, so there's really no need to shy away from changing it even if it may not be for the better. The Vols could have been conservative and kept Fulmer to assure 8 to 10 win seasons. That didn't mean Fulmer was still a great coach and needed to be kept though.

That is the very argument for why Fisher should still be coaching the Titans. Sometimes the evil you know is better than the evil you don't know. UT football would be in a better place right now if Fulmer had never been fired. We wouldn't be a championship caliber team, but we wouldn't be near the bottom of the SEC barrel either. Given the timing of the Fisher's departure, the Titans will likely have to make a very Dooleyesque hire by getting someone who has no business coaching at that level.

Well, I can at least understand your point of view. I don't share it, but I understand it. I'd prefer to hit rock bottom trying to get to the top then settle for 2nd tier with no chance of reaching the top. I have often questioned myself for feeling this way over the last couple of years watching the Vols, but I still think it the best approach in the long run.

Understand, but if the new coach was an outsider from the current organization, I could see a coach wanting to keep VY. Without experiencing the maturity issues first hand, many coaches would prefer VY over the alternate options. Most coaches also feel like they can fix any player with talent.

I don't think that's what happening, but it wouldn't surprise me with Bud.

Most also don't want to walk into the prevous year's chaos or a situation where the turn of events has just shown the starting QB to be at a higher power position (or really be more untouchable) than the head coach.

Really, though, you might also be giving an NFL coach a lot more power/say than he actually has as part of a franchise in this league.

It's really not like college where the coach gets pick, choice, and major or final say in who the team adds. It's a business; one with several superiors who have a say (most times more) in these very issues.

Correct, but the Rams were done. If the Titans had scored and put it into overtime, the game would have felt like th Titans had a huge lead to the Rams. Their defense was dead tired by the end of the 4th quarter.

But, close does not count in the NFL.

it'd probably be whoever got the ball honestly. The Titans would have had the momentum of the two, but that really guarantee any outcome.

(close really does though; it is the main reason why coaches get their contract extensions / stay with teams for making the playoffs rather)
