I remember him getting railed on by the fans for most of '08 and the beginning of '09 (that UCLA game, good lord). I was very happy when he finally broke out and played like a boss the back half of that year. He really did have a very tumultuous time in Knoxville.

As the OP said, some fans just have no perspective whatsoever. I think Charles Barkley said it best with this gem, "Fans are gonna be fans, but I still think you ought to be able to call 2 or 3 of em out after the game and beat the livin hell out of em."

Crompton looked GREAT against LSU when Ainge got hurt in 2006...and I thought that he would beat Ainge out by the time 2007 rolled around....And he was being coached by Cut...

still a mystery to me about why he didn't perform better at UT....but he definitely did all that he could do to beat Bama in 2009 in Tuscaloosa....

I definitely think that Cut's leaving after 2007 hurt him more than anything else...He showed some true potential under Kiffin....

Either way--it's extremely sad to realize that fans went after his mother and family.....the WORST possible display of cowardice from idiots posing as fans...

Man, I remember that '06 game. St my sisters wedding. Kept checking for the score. So happy when the wedding started. Sucked when I checked later.

Now this is an indictment of the treatment of (some) players by a portion of fans. Embarrassing that someone actually told his mother that he or she hoped Crompton and his family would die.

All too often fans have no perspective on what truly matters in life. Not just at UT - UK fans threatening a referee, Bama fans and Michigan fans threatening kickers. It's despicable.

we have too big of a portion of the fanbase that is very embarrassing and toxic unfortunately. It shouldnt surprise you.

Seems to me Lincoln was the one missing FGs in game situations (UCLA - Alabama etc) I always liked Crompton

David Cutcliffe is the one that held him back.

Dave Clawson screwed his head up. That offense he brought in, and the new DC was a double whammy.
Eventually, Kiffin saw that he was a pretty good passer on the roll, and moved the pocket a lot.

Shoutout to CLK..

That is a serious plum crazy way to be and show it! I'm as big of a fan as anybody but to both memtally and physically live through these young 20 something year olds is plain stupid!

Sad part is that guy, nor anyone in his family, was as successful as that 18 year old Crompton. If he was he wouldn't have been like that!

Cutcliffe spent more time trying to prop up Ainge's ego than he did developing Crompton. Ainge should have lost his scholarship after the 2005 LSU game. He set this program back 10 years.

Tennessee went to the SEC championship in '07 with Ainge as quarterback.
He looked as bad as anyone ever in '05 at LSU, but I don't see how Ainge set the program back 10 years.

This may be the dumbest thing I've read. Ainge put up fantastic numbers in 2006 and 2007, and until he got hurt vs SC in 2006 (on a dumb play call, qb draw near SC goal line in a game we had wrapped up late) he was being mentioned as a Heisman contender. We were the best one loss team in America after the SC game and that dumb play call getting him injured messed up what could've been a chance at a bcs game. Oh guess who called that bonehead play that got Ainge injured? Your boy Cutcliffe...

Set us back 10 years? You mean like the VERY NEXT YEAR when he lost one game as a starter and was the last UT QB to beat BAMA? Or the year after that when he was the last UT QB to go to Atlanta? You're a blithering idiot. And for what it's worth Crompton has done several interviews where he admitted he was uncoachable in 06/07 and both parties have agreed that was part of Cutcliffes decision to take the Duke job AND not to come back in 09.

Understanding you have walkons starting on your OL was cause for Kiffin to roll Crompton out a lot. He basically was saving his life and limbs.
