If the defense plays the way it has for the rest of the season and people start calling Tim Banks for a head coaching job. Who would be your top 5 replacements for him as DC?

Or would you prefer to throw the bag at him and make him one of the top highest paid DC’s in the country in an attempt to retain him?

None. You hand Tim Banks a blank check with a fat long term deal and incentives and promote him to assistant head coach. Pay him more money and provide more job security than any mid-level program would even think to offer. He’s earned it and you’ve already experienced what a set back it was on the other side of the ball when you lost Golesh.

Learn from your mistakes and pay the man whatever it takes.

I believe Tim Banks has done a great job. Even when we did not have as much talent, we had one of the nation’s best tackle for loss percentage.

Coaching is ultra important, also equally important is the talent we have been able to stockpile in order to have such a dominating defense.

I think he will be heavily sought after at the end of season. Not sure we will pay him what it takes to stay. I hope so.

1. We can't realistically pay that sort of money to a coordinator, let alone multiple coordinators.

2. Money might not even matter. If Banks has aspirations of being a HC and the right comes calling, I doubt even making him the highest paid coordinator in college football would matter much.

You shake his hand and wish him well. He deserves the right to be a HC and it is nothing but helpful for Heupel to continue getting HC jobs for his coordinators. Top-shelf candidates will want to come here. And it actually helps to have new blood in the system so it doesn’t get stale.

Win-win for everyone.

Looking at the openings in College Football, there doesn’t seem to be an opening this year where Banks would fit. The Purdue job will likely open. Ball St and Central Michigan are the only other possibilities right now and they have others they are pursuing. I think he ends up here another year when the dust settles.

How do you know where Banks would fit? Did you really think Heupel would fit here?

I was reading this article from 247.

And looking for things in the Midwest since I believe he has ties there. I just didn’t see his name mentioned in any of the openings.

Yeah but that doesn’t necessarily say where Banks would fit. Besides, nobody knows whether or not a coach would fit somewhere until he gets there. Like I said, there were many Vol fans, including myself, who thought Heupel wouldn’t fit in the SEC. I thought the same thing about Shane Beamer at SC.

While I love the idea, I’m not sure money is the only factor that would make someone stay in that position. Some people care about their legacy and the impact they want to leave, as well as having control over the team’s decision-making. It could also be challenging to retain assistant coaches who are eager to move up in the coaching world. Considering that Heupel already prefers promoting from within, I believe he would choose Inge. Let’s not forget that Inge was already a Co-Defensive Coordinator at Washington. The reason he came here was the strong opportunity to step into that role once Tim Banks starts receiving job offers.

Banks has done a great job. I remember when CJH came here, we struggled getting a DC. Pay him and keep him happy in Tennessee

Definitely. I’ve said it before and I own it, I wasn’t thrilled about the Heupel hire at all. Glad that I was proven wrong.
