Did Banks call the plays at Penn State or did the other guy?More recently...
With Banks on staff, Penn State ranked in the top 25 nationally five times in fewest yards per play allowed five times and three times in scoring defense and tackles for loss. In his five-season tenure, the Nittany Lions totaled the fifth-most sacks (221), allowed the sixth-fewest passing touchdowns (70) and ranked ninth in yards per play allowed (4.8), ninth in forced fumbles (95), 14th in scoring defense (21.2 ppg), 13th in run defense (132.7 ypg), 17th in total defense (344.6 ypg) and 25th in pass defense (211.9 ypg).
I can't get past the constant "Co-DC" title either. Like you said, it screams valuable assistant coach that's not strong enough to scheme and call plays on his own. I would have much preferred Conklin if those were the two that said yes. Stinks the Kansas City guy backed out. That one looked very solid on paper.I've never been a fan of guys who make a living as a "co-" labeled coach. Smacks of an gratuitous designation to keep a recruiting specialist happy. Perhaps he's been able to absorb a good amount of knowledge and is ready to fly solo? Having said that, I'll repeat my previous statement that no matter who we hire, he's going to have some lackluster numbers due to the offense Heupel is going to run. Instead of following yardage, I'll be following turnovers. If we're gonna take a chance with a hire, we need to make sure they're great recruiters. They've got to be elite at something so I'll take recruiting in this instance.
Last time as DC and main play caller
In 2012, Banks' defense at Illinois gave up 50+ points 3 times. One of those teams was La Tech. He was the primary play caller. Gave up an average of 197 yards rushing, 193 passing per game
2013, Banks' defense gave up more than 50 points twice and 60 points once. The least amount of points his defense allowed was 14. Gave up an 238 yards rushing, 247 yards passing per game
2014, his defense gave up 50+ once, more than 30 points 9 times. Gave up an average of 239 rushing, 217 passing per game
2015, they brought in Mike Phair and demoted Banks to Co-DC. The defense only gave up 40 points one time and more than 30 twice. Gave up an average of 166 yards rushing, 183 yards passing per game
2016, he was fired along with the rest of the football staff
These numbers are terrible, even for the Big 10
It's also significant if he called the defenses in one place (Illinois) and not in another (Penn State). So question becomes, is our program more akin to Illinois? Or Penn St? In terms of talent, coaching, and strength of competition?
That, I think will determine this man’s success or failure.
We know how this jockey rides a “slow” horse (Illinois,) and how he rides a “fast” horse (PSU.) Which horse are we?
Plus their 4 man front jives which means we get rid of the idiotic 3-4 scheme and can actually be successful on defense.
Yup. This hire had ONE thing in mind and it wasn’t resume.Last time as DC and main play caller

Definitely not a stupid comment, football is just a game, it's not the most important thing , we'd like to win games but having faith and our coaches having faith and instilling that faith into the young men on this team is top priority. Making these guys regardless of back ground into better men is the most important job of a coach. Coach Fulmer helped make me the man I am today and that means more to me than all the games we wonI didn’t say that, I just “liked” it. But again... depends on your priorities as to whether or not that’s a stupid comment.
Plenty of successful atheists and agnostics too. Just look the at the Top 10 of the Forbes wealthiest people list. No state run university should hire people based on their religion, and thankfully they aren’t allowed to.That’s not true. Some of the most successful people I know are also Christians. If they worked for me we’d crush it.
Banks isn’t known as an elite recruiter; he was about mid-tier on Penn State’s staff if you look at the rankings. He is known for being elite at developing players.I've never been a fan of guys who make a living as a "co-" labeled coach. Smacks of an gratuitous designation to keep a recruiting specialist happy.
