Tim Banks Officially Announced As DC

I'm assuming it's going to be a "feast or famine" type of defense that emphasizes takeaways and red zone stops. For those who get annoyed when the other teams drive the field between the 20's, this might be a frustrating brand of football to you.

They probably didn't even tell him what they were calling. If you have to go back 6 or 8 years in someone's record to find something to whine about, you are just determines to whine. Clearly there is far more good than bad about this hire. And if there isn't, whining won't change it.

Don't people ever get tired of crying about decisions they don't control? I mean what does that do for you? It just astounds me.

Whose crying? And he didn't go back to some arbitrary time 6-8 years ago. He went back to the last time Banks called plays, which is a reasonable place to go. I hope Banks is successful here, there appears to be cause to believe he is a good recruiter, but if these last 14 years have taught us anything, it should be that you always keep your cup on. Always. We ignore that at our own peril.

A position coach who has never been a coordinator and has only been a coach for four years is a “great” hire? This boards logic 😂

That's a the style of defense needed in today's college football. Now we just gotta get the correct type of players in place.

I never wanted the TO dependent defenses some were advocating for to pair with the defense. That's how you end up giving up 35 points a game and you gotta score 36 just to win.

It doesn’t matter what anyone in here advocates for. Heupel already said that’s the defense he wants and it’s pretty much required when you run a hyper speed offense that puts the defense back on the field quickly. If you try to play a defense that just keeps the offense in front then they’re going to get exhausted

Last time as DC and main play caller

In 2012, Banks' defense at Illinois gave up 50+ points 3 times. One of those teams was La Tech. He was the primary play caller. Gave up an average of 197 yards rushing, 193 passing per game

2013, Banks' defense gave up more than 50 points twice and 60 points once. The least amount of points his defense allowed was 14. Gave up an 238 yards rushing, 247 yards passing per game

2014, his defense gave up 50+ once, more than 30 points 9 times. Gave up an average of 239 rushing, 217 passing per game

2015, they brought in Mike Phair and demoted Banks to Co-DC. The defense only gave up 40 points one time and more than 30 twice. Gave up an average of 166 yards rushing, 183 yards passing per game

2016, he was fired along with the rest of the football staff

These numbers are terrible, even for the Big 10

How is anyone evaluating this as a good hire. My goodness that’s rough.

No idea if he will be any good or not but numbers don’t give you a good / full indication of the defense. Maybe the offense was terrible and the defense was on the field way to much. Maybe the offense was up tempo. Maybe the talent was bad Or maybe he was a bad coach.
Tenn had a defensive guru / defensive back specialist last year and gave up 165 rushing yards and 265 passing yards per game. And they played Ky and Vandy who had no passing game.

. Pruitts defenses were aggressive . They blitzed on every play , because the front four couldn't get there . They twisted and stunted. Then they gassed due to a horrible lack of depth. They tried to play zone behind it because there are severe liabilities in the secondary in man coverage. SEC QB's anticipated and carved up the blitz.

If the new coach is aggressive and blitzes every play and works in a fair amount of twists and stunts which playing a zone system of bend but don't break ...perhaps we will have different results with the same or less than same core of players ?

CJH's premise will be to gain big leads on offense and turn his defenses loose to pass rush. He will obtain these leads against the weaker teams , but this will not materialize against the top tier of our conference. Our defense will look remarkably similar to last seasons in those matchups. If he can get us 6 or 7 wins , I will take it at this point.

Yikes. This may turn out the worst DC we've ever had since 2012.

He's been a coach since 96? Still don't think it's a good hire though. Time will tell. Just have a bad feeling about this one. Not hiring someone with playcalling experience may be a mistake that puts Heup behind the 8 ball. I'll probably never know why we didn't just give it to Steele.

He has playcalling experience.

Heupel’s like YES finally a defensive coordinator who knows how to give up a lot of points! We back baby! Feels like 98 🍊 😆

So 4/5 years to get all the players and system in place. Rinse , repeat.
Sorry to have this attitude and I'm sure JH can do some good things but it's just been so darn long I'm not drinking the koolaid again.
Show me some quality wins, upset some teams and I'm all in. But for the foreseeable I'm not planning my Saturdays around the UT football team.
With that said, I'm no fair weather and have weathered many a storm in Knoxville. Been a Vol fan since John Ward started calling the games on my AM radio. It's been a while.
Hopefully you will be able to drink the OrangeRade again in the near future. Understand your point of view completely.

Just an early observation, I like what I see. I also, like the fact that he has done some coaching at Memphis. Memphis is always a fertile recruiting area.
