Is it just me or do the vols need to involve the te more? I mean even when they had Whitten, they would totally ignore the te. He would be having a good game and then bam they forget all about him.

Whitten was a big part of the offense when he was here and the Cottams will play a crucial role in the offense this year, IMO.

Brad Cottam 13 14 182 13.0 0 45 14.0

Not too bad for a TE, but I expect him to get 25-30 catches this year, min.

Edit: The stats are: Games Played, Catches, Yards, Average, ??, Long, and avg per game

We are very talented at TE with Brown and Cottam. I look for both of those guys to have some impact this season.

I read somewhere that Cutcliffe was going to try and play BOTH TEs in the offense, via using one as a FB.

Not sure how that is gonna pan out, but its something I read somewhere.

Gotta love a TE that can catch the ball well. That's like setting a pissed off bull loose in the opponents secondary :)

I believe the 0 you're wondering about is touchdowns. Don't remember him scoring last year...

Brown also had a decent season: 31rec 239yds and the 1st TD of the year vs Cal

Brown is too slow. I would rather have Cottam anyday. Expect Cottam to catch around 35-50 balls this year with 3 TD's.

Witten was the leading reciever on the team! How could you say he was forgotten? I do agree that we have not used the TE much before or since, but JW was used a lot.

I doubt he catches 50 passes.

Exactly right, govols. Show me a team in major college football with 50 catches by a TE and I'll show you a team with no wide receivers and an incredibly anemic offense. Heck, I think the record is less than that.

Well he appeared forgotten at times to me. I cant remember ecxact games etc. but there were a few games where I remember the offence struggle , which that year seemed to be more than would like, and they would go several series without an attempt to Whitten. They would just keep doing the same lackluster plays over and over. I didnt mean forgotten alltogether. Just like the year when the vols were playing florida. Tn was going 4 wide and running the ball down fla. throat mixed with some passes, and fla. looked to have no answer. Well what happened? If I remember right Tn came out later in the game didnt run that at all and fla. once again fla. wins when we had the game under control.

i don't think it's any secret that the TE this year will be more involved in the offense. we have some good talent there, and like someone said in another thread, it probably shouldn't be a surprise if we see some two TE sets......esp. since now, we have basically done away with the FB position as a result of the potential we have at TE......could be very interesting........

but the TE won't be the leading WR on the team, and nor shoud he be.

I dont know about you guys, but I'd REALLY like to see us go out on a limb, and in 1st or 2nd and goal at the 4 or 5, line Cottam up WIDE and throw him a jump ball, wanna bet against him?

There is a reason why Witten disappeared...its because in '02 he had NO ONE to take the pressure off him after "The Future" took a pass on the season.

And the reason Witten did so well is because he was fast for a tight end...ask Michigan's secondary. I havent seen any one of the current crop show near that speed. Personally I'd rather see more routes to our running backs.

Did you by any chance see B. Cottam break away vs Vandy??? He is every bit as fast as Witten IMO.
