I had dinner with Jim Chaney at a commit's house last week and here are some tidbits from the night that I feel comfortable sharing.

1. Tyler Bray is a legitimate NFL first rounder. He didn't start the first of the year because he had a little too much fun when he got here and through the summer not because of his size. He's really grown up and his potential his scary good.

2. Justin Worley has a chance to be just as good and could compete with Bray.

3. Phil Simms was livid when they benched Matt. He gave Chaney, Hinshaw and Dooley an ear full to say the least. They told him that Simms held the ball way too long.

4. Justin Hunter is the real deal, NFL first rounder.

5. Our running backs are not very good (putting it lightly). They have a RB grade where they evaluate all RBs in the SEC on runs they feel should be TDs. Poole graded out last. Oku is not good and Neal is slow. Our line was not as big of a problem in our running game as our RBs were.

6. Our defense has ONE legitimate SEC starter in the secondary. Our LBs are not very good.

7. Expect a couple of suprise signees on NSD, highly rated. He feels very good about how our class will look on NSD.

8. Kiffin called him once a day for 23 days straight days offering him the USC OC job. He didn't take it because he didn't want to raise his kids in LA.

9. Last year the playing calling was 70/30 Kiffin. Another reason he did not take the OC job at USC.

10. He has lost over 70 lbs since he's been at UT.

Out of all of those, this seems the most exaggerated. Thanks for the post. :salute:

Interesting that he didn't take the job because of L.A., and the play calling numbers, and not because he despised Kiffin.

If you ever watch the replay of our games from last year, you'll notice that Poole misses a lot of open holes. I like Poole, but a better runner would get more out of what's given to him on most plays.

IMO Coach Chaney has done a good job, our offense made strides of improvement throughout the season, even when Simms was starting. I am a bit surprised about the comment on our RBs, maybe its the orange colored glasses but i thought they were good.I know nothing about grading them out and all that stuff, but certainly there were times just to my eye I thought they took the wrong route or made the wrong cut...anyway, i dont know enough to make an educated comment either way so ill just say if thats the case, we need to find a good RB. I am afraid mostly of what our defense will look like by the time Summer rolls around. Possibly a new DC, JJ might not be here, our LBs...hopefully we can have some young guys step in like guys did on offense this year and make contributions.

Not sure that I understand the Neal is slow quote..when he caught the 2 touchdown passes out of the backfield the guys was screaming down the sidelines..

All very good tidbits. Thanks for sharing.

I find the fact that Kiffin wanted Chaney so badly is telling in a lot of ways. Chaney is a good OC and we will see a lot of his genius this coming season.

Bray is legit. And the coaches love Worley. That is a nice problem to have.

Phil Simms - not surprising. Can't really blame him as a father, but as a former NFL QB he should tell his son the truth.

Janzen is the only legit starter on D. Hopefully others will emerge.

This recruiting class will close strong. I am excited about a few surprises.

70lbs? Really? That is great news.

I feel like that defensive stat may be at this moment playing like a SEC starter should at their position.

I definatley feel that Teague, Gordon, and Malik Jackson have the talent to be good SEC players, they are just either still learning or playing a position they aren't fully suited for.

I think the claim that we only have one SEC defensive player is overblown.

Malik Jackson, Janzen Jackson, and possibly Walker are potentially NFL players.

Having to start them this year was premature, but Herman Lathers, Marsalis Teague, Eric Gordon, Corey Miller, and Jacques Smith are all legit SEC players. I think a case can be made for Waggner and Brewer as well.

Posts like these are worth the time wading through the *****ing and moaning that goes on this board.

EDIT: feel free to PM any details you don't feel comfortable posting. :)

I thought I would address this since it was metioned. Most all the coaches really liked Kiffin and his approach to revitalizing our program and he believes Kiffin can flat out coach. The main difference that Chaney sees between the two is that Kiffin was only really concerned about what happened within the football program and that is where character issues with players came into play. Whereas, Dooley is concerned about how the football program represents UT and the players actions on and off the field. He has a lot of respect for Dooley and believes he will be very successful.
