Awesome, Milo. Have an itinerary in mind? I'm heading out west in April (but not so much your neck of the woods - San Fran and Napa/Sonoma). It'll be my wife's first trip to Cali.

Tokyo for four nights, going to stay at the Imperial. The trip is with my brother, and a friend from Sendai. In that four days I plan on hitting up Roppongi for a night or two, Asakusa, Ginza for some shopping. Then probably Harajuku and whatever else is good.

Past that, we're thinking of possibly making it down to Osaka for a day. But spending most of the time around Sendai.

I'm also going to be bringing back a lot of car parts for resale in the US. Big bucks there. JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) car parts can frequently be marked up 800-1000% by the time they hit the US.

Wow....are there any tariffs on those items that you get hit with when you come back besides the usual customs process?

Apparantley duty is not too hard to get around with stuff like that, and even if it does get taxed, still nowhere near enough to lose money.

i was in osaka a couple of years ago on a 3 day layover. I was rather shocked how few people spoke any english. my pre trip lazyness was not rewarded. on the other hand i found a place that made great burgers (and before i get flamed for eating a burger in japan it should be noted it was the first one i had after 4 weeks in east asia).

the osaka aquarium is fantastic, but frankly there is little else to see. the castle is interesting, but is a rebuild. kyoto is a short trip and a much nicer place to visit IMO.

My dad's been to Japan roughly 12 times, and loves Kyoto. Problem is that getting around Japan can be very expensive. Train tickets, freeway or otherwise.

They are also about 40 miles from eachother. It's about 200 miles from Osaka to Sendai.

Kind of an interesting way the freeway works there... You get a ticket when you get on the freeway, and wherever you get off, it calculates charges a certain amount based on that distance.

Maybe you can finally make it to a UT game off of your car parts earnings!

So...it's like an automated turnpike...there's a novel idea.

Yeah. I forgot about those. There's no toll booths on the west coast.

:)

Yeah..you get used to them over here. But, just automating that process seems to make a lot more sense. They pay a lot of people to sit in booths and take your ticket from you here. Of course, they do have the autopass kind of lanes where it draws out of your account...but still automated tickets sounds better than the manual ticket method.

Stupid English...

Japanese FTW. Much more of a straight-forward language. Just no kanji, for the love of God.
