Josh Heupel is the 8th coach in Tennessee Football history to coach 60 games. Here is every Tennessee Football coach’s record through 60 games.

Note: Heupel has now coached 64 games at UT with a record of 45-19

1. Robert Neyland: 54-2-4

2. Philip Fulmer: 49–10-1

3. Bill Battle: 46-12-2

T4: Doug Dickey: 43-13-4

T4: Josh Heupel: 43-17

6. Bowden Wyatt: 40-17-3

7. Butch Jones: 34-26

8. Johnny Majors: 30-29-1

He walked into a much worse situation than anyone in the modern era. Two of those coaches walked into a well stocked situation

That really doesn’t matter about situation. If you can’t coach you can screw up the best of situations. See Bill Battle.
Yeah, of course. My point was that Heupel walked into a dumpster fire and within one year made the program nationally relevant. Battle never had a losing season though. Someone else had two of them late in his career

Josh can coach circles around Coach Battle...IMO

sure but he tanked the program. See Majors first 6 years. Thanks to Dickey roster and Conrad..

It’s astounding that Heupel didn’t have a losing season.

Hiring Majors after the 1969 season sounds good retrospectively, but he was an unproven commodity then. With only two seasons under his belt as a head coach, his record (6-14) would not have inspired confidence.

He wasn't any more unproven than Bill Battle. Actually Battle was more unproven than Majors 🤔

I don't disagree with your first point in the slightest. However, ask yourself this question: If option B was not a Tennessee All-American named Johnny Majors, would you have offered him the job at Tennessee if his credentials then were 6-14 at Iowa State? 'tis all about context.
