Well, we are now just three weeks away from Football time in Tennessee! I’ve got a beach trip planned for one of the 3 weeks, so I’m hoping that will help move time along. Figured I’d start a thread and ask how everyone plans to celebrate the start of the season and cheering on the Vols. For me, I chose not to head to Charlotte this year and will be staying home in Knoxville for the opening game. I’ll have to wait an additional excruciating week before seeing this team live in action here at Neyland. For the opening game we plan on having some friends over. I’ll be putting a pork butt on the smoker the around 10pm the night before the game. Getting up the next morning and making some pinto beans, smoked Mac and cheese, and greens, and of course in honor of the new coach, some good ol skillet cornbread in the cast iron. Jack Daniels will be flowing and I’ll be cheering on the Vols from the man cave who will hopefully be putting a hurtin on West Virginia. Certainly the best time of year here in East Tennessee and I can’t wait for September to roll around. What do y’all have planned for the opener?

I'll come home from working a 24+ hour shift and hopefully get some sleep. Plan to wake up around 2 and watch the game with the wife.

What kind of smoker do you have?

I'm just hoping I have electricity to watch the game, as on multiple years a hurricane has struck on Labor Day weekend and knocked out our power.

Other years, I have put the game on re-cord and gone dove hunting on opening day ... but this year, I believe I'm all football.

As I've done every game for years, just as the ball is kicked off to start the game, I'll take a shot of Jack out of my flask.

This little personal tradition doesn't always help us win the game, but those games where it doesn't work, it at least helps with the heartbreak a little.

I'll be in Charleston, SC beachin' it that day. Probably walk off the beach into one of the bars and watch it with all my new friends.

I have a few different smokers, but my favorite for long smokes has always been my simple Weber Smokey Mountain verticle smoker. It’s a great smoker with a few mods to it. I have 2 of them and love them. 22.5 inch can hold a good amount of food on it.

I always wanted a good smoker and finally bought a GMG Daniel Boone model a few weeks back. I feel a little embarrassed to admit it, but it has a built-in WiFi digital controller that keeps the temp perfect and can be controlled via an app on my phone. I laughed at my co-worker when he bought one. But then he brought in some of the food he cooked on it and after doing some research, I ended up getting one myself. Really having a lot of fun with it.

1. Have the big new TCL ready and waiting.
2. Have 60 strong tray of Zaxby wings covered in Terry Ho's original Yum Yum sauce
3. Piles of self-cut celery, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower with a self-made red onion-garlic-Parmesan sauce.
4. A small tub filled with ice and Red Stripe bottled beer (actually only 8 bottles since it's just me and Shirley).

If we win, the next day we celebrate with a dinner of bison hump roast, turnip greens, steamed carrots, hush puppies, and red chateau de garlic wine. The wine is pre-ordered from Rapazzini Winery, the only people I know who sells it.

Man I have a ton of fun with it. It’s a great hobby, and it just so happens that good BBQ pairs great with Tennessee Football!
