Sorry to elaborate on the misery further, but I'm guessing that Tennessee is now leading the country in 3-and-outs.

As of Oct 18 (after the Miss St game), only LA-Monroe had a higher percentage of offensive drives resulting in 3-and-outs than Tennessee among 120 FBS teams. And in the 3 games since that statistic, the Vol offense has produced 3-and-outs at an even higher percentage than that...

# of 3-and-out drives; total # of drives; (opponent)
7 of 14 (UCLA)
1 of 12 (UAB)
2 of 9 (Florida)
8 of 14 (Auburn)... including all four 4Q possessions!
2 of 12 (N Ill)
4 of 11 (Georgia)
3 of 10 (Miss St)
4 of 10 (Alabama)
7 of 16 (S Car)
4 of 11 (Wyoming)
-------------------
42 of 119 drives (35.3%) have been 3-and-out this season.

[Note: This doesn't count 3-and-fumble, 3-and-INT, 3-and-missed-FG; 3-and-regulation, or 3-and-fourth-down-attempts; only 3-and-punt.]

This also coincides with Tennessee ranking 114 out of 120 in time of possession (27:08/game as of Nov 1).

This also quantifies statistically how the defense is having to work overtime to make up for such a deficient offense.

All the more reason to say, "Hats off to Eric Berry and the defense."

We know our offense sucks, but our whole team sucks and it's a moot point here and now at this point in the season. Thanks for playing though.

When you have a crappy QB, O-Line, WR's, RB's, and a OC that is in WAY over his head....you should lead the country in that stat!

Notice that Duke is also in the bottom 10 in 3 & outs, also...

Cutcliffe and Ainge gave us plenty of those last year, also.

Our playcalling by the offensive coordinator doesnt help either. I wish they would put that guy in tar, throw feathers on him and send him back to Richmond. Tonight.

Plus i also must point out that we gave up another non-offensive td,hell we almost gave up 2.

Is there anyway they could fire Clawson now to assure us that he won't be back next season?

Yes, there were a good many three-and-outs in 2007 but not quite as many proportionally. Granted, with the old clock rules, Tennessee averaged 13.8 drives per game in 2007. So far in 2008, Tennessee is only averaging 11.9 drives per game. And of course, three-and-outs aren't as noticeable when you have a reasonable number of scoring drives (unlike this year).

# of 3-and-out drives; total # of drives; (opponent)
4 of 14 (Cal)... including all three 4Q possessions! (I was there... aarrgghh!)
3 of 14 (So Miss)
5 of 14 (Florida)
4 of 13 (Ark St)
3 of 12 (Georgia)
3 of 14 (Miss St)
1 of 11 (Alabama)
5 of 14 (S Car)
?? (LA-Lafayette... can’t find stats; probably few 3&outs since Tenn won 59-7)
3 of 14 (Arkansas)
2 of 12 (Vanderbilt)
4 of 21 (Kentucky)
3 of 13 (LSU)
3 of 13 (Wisconsin)
-------------------
43 of 179 drives (24.0%) were 3-and-out in 2007 with Ainge and Cutcliffe.

Sorry to offer an explanation (irony intended), but I think stats like these clarify how bad the offensive situation is. And that's important because I don't think the defense is doing that bad... it's not perfect, but they got absolutely no help from the offense.

I'm a lifelong Tennessee fan and don't like these stats at all and that's why I prefaced my remarks with an apology. I suffered the humiliation of the UCLA game in person and my young son left the game very, very upset. (He has now gone to 3 Tenn games and seen them lose to Vandy, Cal, and UCLA... not good at all... he thinks he's jinxed.)

I live out here in SoCal and many of my UCLA friends (and I use that term loosely) question why Tennessee would force out a coach who won a natl championship at his alma mater. I think stats like this show why some changes were necessary. It's not just a bad season in terms of wins and losses, it's an abyssmal season in terms of offense... a record-setting season in terms of offensive production (or the lack thereof).

Anyway, go Vols... and I really, really hope Tenn clobbers UCLA in Knoxville in 2009. I wish I could be there in person to see it.

Would have been interesting to see how many 3-and-outs our defense has forced this season and see how they rank nationally in that category...

I don't know how the Tennessee defense ranks, but here's how many three-and-outs they've forced this season...

# of 3-and-out drives; total # of drives; (opponent)
4 of 16 (UCLA)
3 of 11 (UAB)
1 of 7 (Florida)
7 of 14 (Auburn)... including 5 of Auburn’s 7 second half possessions
4 of 12 (N Ill)
2 of 10 (Georgia)
4 of 12 (Miss St)
3 of 10 (Alabama)
6 of 15 (S Car)
3 of 11 (Wyoming)
-------------------
The Vol defense has forced 37 of 118 drives (31.4%) of their opponents to be 3-and-out this season.

That’s pretty good if ~30-35% is the worst in the nation on the offensive side... ~31% on defense is probably somewhere near the top in the nation. (Granted, there's other ways to be good on defense.... bend but don't break... turnovers... etc)
