Sorry to elaborate on the misery further, but I'm guessing that Tennessee is now leading the country in 3-and-outs.
As of Oct 18 (after the Miss St game), only LA-Monroe had a higher percentage of offensive drives resulting in 3-and-outs than Tennessee among 120 FBS teams. And in the 3 games since that statistic, the Vol offense has produced 3-and-outs at an even higher percentage than that...
# of 3-and-out drives; total # of drives; (opponent)
7 of 14 (UCLA)
1 of 12 (UAB)
2 of 9 (Florida)
8 of 14 (Auburn)... including all four 4Q possessions!
2 of 12 (N Ill)
4 of 11 (Georgia)
3 of 10 (Miss St)
4 of 10 (Alabama)
7 of 16 (S Car)
4 of 11 (Wyoming)
-------------------
42 of 119 drives (35.3%) have been 3-and-out this season.
[Note: This doesn't count 3-and-fumble, 3-and-INT, 3-and-missed-FG; 3-and-regulation, or 3-and-fourth-down-attempts; only 3-and-punt.]
This also coincides with Tennessee ranking 114 out of 120 in time of possession (27:08/game as of Nov 1).
This also quantifies statistically how the defense is having to work overtime to make up for such a deficient offense.
All the more reason to say, "Hats off to Eric Berry and the defense."
