2) Gravely ZT 50- 50 inch deck, 24hp- $3,200

Anyone have any experince with these, or other recommendations..

With the budget you are proposing I would go with John Deere. Has excellent service department in nwa and a great warranty.

If u are not opposed to good used higher end unit I'd shop around Craigslist. Example John Deere 757. It's a great unit 7 iron deck etc.

I completely understand. Don't hesitate to ask any questions either. Been doing this along time. I've had them all and I know which ones are junk.

And honestly this late in the season I might would have some one do the lawn while you have time to shop. Save the bucks and have plenty of time to shop.

I'm looking to switch to a 48" deck mower. I notice the exmark brand seems to be the most popular. It's the one I see the most anyway.

Is it good?

Buy a Toro. I sell and service commercial equipment, and I'd buy nothing else in the category save for maybe an Exmark. A Toro Z is better than or at very least equal to a Deere, without paying for a green hat. Getting Gravely parts is like hooking up with a nun. Possible but difficult. Just don't go for a Husqvarna

toro is a great option, exmark as well....

husky and cub are junk.....and stay away from grass hopper

whatever any off you do- do not buy anything with a 42" deck

i run kubota---

but the op simply needs something of good quality and dependable...hes not mowing for a living....

just shop around for something with low hours and a solid name behind it where service and parts are readily available

Gravely makes a very dependable mower
Shindaiwa weed eater and blower

gravely is not popular here..parts and service will suck

ill agree on the blowers i run the 8510 shindy its a beast

weed eater not so much lots of power but run too hot for me- stihl or red max

opti oil for the mix dummy proof

I've had my CC for 7 yrs and put over 100 hrs on it with 0 problems. Keep it greased and change the oil every 50 hrs. I'll take that deal for under 2 grand tyvm.

Thanks, for the comments

The dealer I visited sold

Grass Hopper
Gravely
Snapper
Toro

and he ranked them in that order, I had bought a Snapper rider from him when I moved here the first time in '04.. So I didn't really look at the Toro options

I'll check them out when I go back

The John Deere is at Lowe's, so I can get 10% off of it, we have a coupon from moving, so we're getting a new washer and dryer too..

The wife hated our front loaders, and is going back to a top load machine ( but that's another thread)

no offense to said dealer but toro beats all those...
for all practicable purposes the toro is a bullet proof machine

grasshopper decks are to lightly made spindle assemblies are made out off pot metal and bearings wear out entirely too fast

i had the 722d and 728d with power fold decks...barely made it 2 years

switched to the john deere 1445's and kubota 2560's

mowed on average 250 acres a week

i know this doesnt pertain to your needs but its just what i have experienced over the years

:hi:

thanks I'll definetly look at the Toros
I have to say I partial to the Snapper, simply due to having one growing up and last time I was in Fayetteville

Just saw a Cub Cadet at Home Depot...50 inch 23 hp, for $2899

So one more stop at Straights to see the Toro, and Snapper again, and I'll make a decision

John Deere- 54in, 23hp $3999

Straights Lawn
Gravely- 50in, 24hp $3199
Snapper- 46in, 27hp $3185

I've had a Cub for about 5 years and the deck is a POS. The spindle bolts shear off and pull out of the metal deck. Just bought a JD ztr (the smallest one) and it's great.

I've got a cub cadet riding mower. Gigantic pos. Throws a blade, then a belt, the blade again,....

that's why I'm looking at a deck mower. Everyone I've talked to said eXmark or Toro.

Cub Cadet is made by MTD, who more or less makes lower end crap for a good price. They make several brands, Yard Machine, Bolens, and others. The Toro LX 42 Series (their bottom of the barrel lawn tractor) is also a rebadged MTD

Was the Cub a ZTR

So out of my options which do you recommend?

You could probably get a Toro SS 5020 50" in the low $3k range.

I'd go with the Toro or Gravely, the Deere is a good machine, but very pricy. That and I am a big anti-big box guy. A legit dealer is a much better option as far as service, or the very low (but possible) chance you buy something that is just a lemon
