Thoughts on SEC Standings/Records with 9 conference games left?

If we could play fundamental defense, we would be in the top third of SEC. Our bullpen is a little short, be we have a couple of the best in the League. We need to have better defense play from our catchers, but our pitches are not very good at holding runner at first base. The bats seem to be coming around and hopefully score enough runs to advance to the Regionals.
Defense this weekend was great. It gets better each week.

That really was evident in our series. Our defense was elite. Bama’s sucked.

Yeah somebody asked if I knew much about Bama and I pointed out that defense had been a problem for them all year, but in looking at the stats even I was surprised that we were #1. I think the Fld. % might be better than any Vitello team. If I had to guess going back to the Serrano years, .975 would be average.

Yep. We made some youthful mistakes earlier but are really fielding awesome now.

After a disappointing start to SEC play, we're watching a young talented team mature. With every week of experience, against the best teams in college baseball, they get better in every aspect of the game.

We are only 3 wins out of first place in the SEC. This team could easily go 6-3 to finish out league play. Hosting is a long shot but not off the table if we can avoid disasters like Thursday night.
This team is a little better than the record says . If we can figure out the bull pen . We can definitely do some damage in the postseason.

We’re number one in the league in defense , our bullpen has been our biggest issue

I’d given up on 15 sec wins after we’d blown 4 or 5 games but this team is capable of going 5-4 the last 3 series , 15-15 would be a really good finish and could get us back in the top 20

We do play fundamental defense, we lead the SEC in fielding % lol. Pitching, which is in theory part of defense is Jekyll and Hyde but behind them is rock solid. Pitching is 4th in K’s, 3rd in BB’s, 7th in ERA, and 5th in BA against but also allowed the 5th most HBP’s.

I'm curious about the thoughts on this team and Elander.

I just haven't kept track of this year's team due to some of disappointing results up to this point.

Concern early. But future is bright. Things are starting to come together. Having said that supers/Omaha is a stretch but I like how the team is coming together. I was critical of leadership in March…I may be apologizing for that in June.

There were going to be some growing pains. All new staff and a young team. Sometimes it’s been the bullpen, sometimes the hitting hasn’t matched up with good pitching. In other words, it’s taken some time to gel. As of late the team has played better more consistently. I think Elander is getting more comfortable and I think the team is too.

Young, inexperienced team that plays excellent defense, strong starting pitching, a suspect bullpen outside of a 2-3, and a very capable but inconsistent offense. Elander is a first year head coach who is naturally still learning on the job but had almost a decade apprenticing under CTV and Frank Anderson. The offense was outstanding against Alabama for 2 days (3 games) so hoping that’s the spark for a playoff run.

How do you think this plays out? What's Tennessee's best case scenario? What's likely?

Last I saw Tennessee was projected as a No. 3 seed in Coastal Carolina or FSU's regional.

Remaining schedule :

West Georgia
at Kentucky
Presbyterian
Texas
Belmont
at Oklahoma
SEC Tournament

5-4 to finish the conference schedule.
2-1 to win the Kentucky series
2-1 to win the Oklahoma series
1-2 to lose the Texas series
3-0 in the midweek

I kinda wanted to take today and sorta see how the league did and there’s another day to see how things play out. As we sit, we’re gonna make the cut but we aren’t in line to host. We definitely need to watch how things play out later today great day of baseball coming.

Not to be Capt. Obvious, but we need to handle business against UK, then we can really improve our standing at home versus Texas. Some melt down could hurt, but beat UK, hold our own vs. Texas…things might look different when we head to Stillwater.

Given the standings, as they sit right now, the metric we can control is “they are hot right now, they’ve figured it out.” Shock the baseball world. I’m down for it!!!

All sounds good except one thing……if we “head to Stillwater”, we will miss the series. OU is in Norman. Stillwater is Oklahoma State.
