College football officiating is frequently criticized, often with justification. However, I thought the officiating yesterday was great. They did something on two occasions that I wish crews would do more often - they initially threw a flag, then picked it up after discussing it. They got the McCoy force out right, as well as the two calls where the Pitt players had a foot out of bounds. I’m sure they missed some calls, but the ones that could have had a major impact on the outcome of the game, they got right.

The out of bounds they got wrong then overturned on replay IIRC

We don't usually get those calls on the road. I think they got them all right but Pitt fans probably think they got hosed. Pitt did not use the fake injured player routine to slow down the offense, I guess it never really got cranked up. Good sign for the season, getting calls.

That game had some terribly officiated moments. They seemed completely lost on that safety sequence.

Should've been a safety (intentional grounding), but they at least got rid of the awful targeting / roughing-the-passer call upon review. Much better than what I saw last season where they'd make awful calls and somehow confirm them. It's one thing to get it wrong as it's happening, but quite another to confirm an obviously awful call, but we saw it happen time and time again last season.

Honestly, officiating was surprisingly good in every game I watched yesterday. It was good in the Texas-Bama game, as well. Nice change from last season's awful officiating.

I respectfully, but strongly, disagree with you about the Texas-Bama officiating. There were at least two obvious misses of pass interference that should have been called on Bama when Texas was close to scoring, and then at least three obvious face-mask calls that officials failed to make against Bama as well. And these were all at crucial moments that, if the OBVIOUS calls had been made, would have cost Bama dearly.

Then there was the near-constant holding that was ignored. Frankly, it was one of the worst games for officials either not being in position to see, or simply just failed to throw their flags, more costly penalty-worthy plays that I'd seen in a long time. And I'm not usually one to 'blame the refs." But dang. Texas really got screwed out of a win yesterday IMO.

Go look at the play where B young broke a tackle to set up final FG for the win. #18 for Texas was brutally held right in front of ref. You can see #18 running down the field with his shoulder pad still jacked up. Might not have made a difference but that was a Hugh missed call

The officiating, for the most part was really good. However, they officiated the interior line play terribly. I counted at least 6 holding calls guard-center holding playside LB and 3-4 ineligible linemen downfield 5-7 yards on Pitt passing plays. The initial long run for Pitt was just a terrible fit, all of the other runs between tackles had significant holding.

They didn't want mustard on the field!

The officiating was much better than years past. Yes, I felt they missed a face mask that would have given us 1st and goal at about the 4 yard line, but overall a great job.

I thought they missed a PI on the throw to Tillman.

The offensive PI that was called on our TE was bad. I thought the db came up and initiated contact.

A couple of holding calls were pretty bad.

And, I thought the fumble Wright had, I thought his momentum had stopped and he was going backwards when the ball came out. I don’t know when they blowed the whistle though.

it wasn’t a terribly bad called game though.

You obviously watched a different Bama-Texas game than I did. Two badly missed calls that were absolute gifts to Bama and played a big role in Texas losing that game.

There will always be missed calls throughout a game in every sport. They did a good job yesterday .

Holding calls were an issue at times. Pitt held a lot. The missed INT call just before the blocked punt was very bad. In general Pitt got away with a lot of hands in coverage.
About par I’d say
