Hopefully I did not create "not another one of these again" threads...

I am currently at student at UT but I'm from Memphis and grew up a fan of both. I went to every University of Memphis game in football and some basketball games my whole life up through high school. Yes, I was deprived as a child.

I don't seem to understand the so called "rivalry" between the two schools. I consider myself a UT fan first and I still cheer for Memphis when they aren't playing us but most "Memphis fans" HATE UT. I assume it's because we always beat them...in everything...but once I got to Knoxville and in talking to people it's funny to me how UT fans from East Tennessee don't really even consider it that big of a rivalry or big deal with Memphis. They are like the little brother that we toss around when we're sick of hearing him whine about a lack of attention. I find it very funny because I don't know how many of yall are aware of this but there are a lot of people in Memphis that hate UT more than any other school in the country (as far as athletics).

I'm not sure exactly what the basketball record is when the two teams face each other but I'm pretty sure out of 40 games or so in football Memphis has won once (one of the worst days of my life...). I remember back around 2000 I think it was when Memphis played at UT and Memphis went out before the game and were stomping on the T at midfield...and then they got stomped...

And so I was bored this morning in a class of mine and was reading stuff on the Memphis message boards about UT and they all talk about how big of a deal the "rivalry" is and how much they hate UT and Bruce Pearl. They love to talk about his ugly orange blazer and how he won't wear it against them.

Just curious what yall think about Memphis and/or the so called "rivalry"? And please don't say a bunch of nonsense about we can't look ahead past Arkansas and Georgia and stuff, I completely agree and I'm concerned with our play in those games too but I'm simply asking what yall think of Memphis.

we don't consider it much of a rivalry because
1. we don't play them every year...and
2. it has to be somewhat competitive to be a rivalry and like you said, we beat them all the time.

I believe it's because they suffer from "little-man" syndrome. That university has been in our shadow for years now.Their upset because they will never be on UT's level as far as being a top-notch university. In other words their WUSSY hurts.

I agree 100%. This is perceived as a rivalry by UM fans, but as many other posters have said in other threads, few people outside of SW Tennessee, especially Tennessee fans, pay much attention to UM.

You are also right that many UM fans hate Tennessee with a passion. I have posted this before, but a former boss of mine who played basketball for UM told me years ago that he hoped the Tennessee team plane crashed. That was the end of my feeble attempts to pull for the Tigers.

This is the kind of ignorant crap I grew up listening to...

"Your pitiful program doesn't have national championship games, Final Fours, Elite 8's and barely any Sweet 16's to talk about. You choke in the $EC tournament every year and you choke in the NCAA tournament every year when you are lucky to make it. You are forced to beat your chests over your losing record against Kentucky and your head to head record against us. God knows that if you weren't chicken that wouldn't be the case, but whatever, it is what it is."

That is a direct quote from their message board right now regarding the UT game.

1. Wow Memphis has TWO. Someone please deliver them their cookie. I won't go there because it's not the point but God forbid we look at football records.

2. I feel like even for Memphis being a historically better basketball program than UT, the amount of talent they waste is ridiculous. UT still produces tournament teams as frequently historically as Memphis.

3. We don't choke in SEC tournaments, we actually have to play quality opponents...not teams like Rice and Tulane. And Memphis fans love to point out how Conference USA used to be good, that is very true, and if Memphis was good enough of a program they would've moved up to a better conference too...but they aren't clearly.

Not enough said. The thread was about disparities in the way the two fan bases perceive the rivalry situation, and the hatred of UM fans for UT. I don't think Final Four records are terribly relevant to either.

It's ok, they just don't understand. They see Memphis and immediately fire off the one statistic they know. I'm glad someone actually read what I said and could have something educated to say.

Im a UT fan I hate the Tigers. Im from west Tn, I cant wait until the game. I do consider it a rivalry. If you live anywhere close to Memphis you have to hear alot of crap not only from Memphis fans but Ole Miss, Miss.St, Ark., bama. I would love nothing better for the Vols to roll into Mempho and quiet up a few folks around here.

The hatred is something they have always felt against the VOLS. I think the main reason for the hatred is because we petitioned against them to join the SEC. UT and Ole Miss both, so they hate our guts for it.

And that's the only reason you care about Memphis. Vol fans from anywhere else in the state don't care about Memphis.

I don't even consider Memphis a city in TN. They have no bearing on me whatsoever.

They are MS or AR as far as I am concerned.

Memphis fans only call themselves Memphis fans when their team is winning. This is true for most teams I admit but yall should see what the Liberty Bowl and Forum look like when they aren't doing well (which is always the Liberty Bowl). When UT and Memphis play at the Liberty Bowl its like at least 75% Tennessee fans. Memphis fans know they wont win so they don't show up. Not all Memphis fans are like that but the vast majority are. It's just something to go do when the team is winning otherwise they don't care. (For another example look at the Grizzlies). Tennessee fans from what I've seen do slack off against sub-par teams but overall are much more consistently supportive of their teams than Memphis. If a team is YOUR team you should support them no matter what.

Its a rivalry thats why we play every year so we can come into memphis and try to sneak a good player away from coach cal. If it werent a rivalry we wouldnt be playin them every year. Tn wants to play them in BB as much as memphis wants to play us in football.

I don't know about all that...we don't play each other every year. We didn't play Memphis in football this past season because Memphis tried to get out of playing against us.
