We all thought the same thing.
Missed field goals. Not going for it on 4th down. Giving up crucial 3rd and 4th downs to South Carolina. Blowing a 7 point halftime lead. Giving up an 85 yard pass and 70 yard run that each seemed to put the game away for good.
Those were ALL "Same ol Vols" moments.
But then we all saw flashes of what this team is and will be in the future.
Dobbs played out of his mind. I'm not sure I've ever seen an all-around performance like that by a Tennessee quarterback in my lifetime.
Hurd's spin move to break a tackle and power run into the end zone to bring us within 7 was something we definitely haven't seen since Montario Hardesty was wearing Orange and White, and Hurd is going to make him look like Tauren Poole by the time his career in Knoxville is done.
And the two sacks in overtime. My goodness. Was that Tennessee? When we settle for field goals in the first OT, we lose. We don't sack the quarterback twice, then force him out of bounds and force a 58-yard field goal attempt.
I saw visions of the future Tennessee during the Alabama game. The 1st quarter of that game was haunted by the Tennessee of the past. This time, it was the 3rd quarter. Dooley, Kiffin, and even Fulmer's ghosts linger, but tonight was a thorough exorcism of our past demons, frustrations, and curses.
The South Carolina win last year was tremendous because it was against a ranked team, but this win was arguably more important.
This young team won on the road at a place not called Kentucky or Vanderbilt for the first time since 2007. And they came back from a two touchdown deficit with less than 5 minutes to go to do it.
This is a new Tennessee team that is taking on a new identity. This is the Tennessee team that we will be watching in the future.
Now let's keep that new identity rolling by not just making a bowl game, but beating the hell out of our opponent too.
8-5, baby.
