This is year 2

Dooley said 1st year does not count and I agree, here is an example of why. When DD came to UT it was a couple weeks before signing day, one recruit was Stone from Jawja. Stone showed up in January and after 2 weeks of spring practice was a starter! Stone was 17 years old. It is taking longer than most people want but reality is reality. Now DD has his staff and a pretty fair starting 22. We need more depth and a big back and we will get that this year. This is a team of juniors and sophomores, we are going to get there so hang tough. 8-4 would not be that bad considering where we have been. I am on the DD train, until I'm not,

Not good at math?

Go root for Clemson.

I know all the NegaVols are going to bash me for this, but I'm onboard with this being Year Two. Dooley inherited a mess, and it took a year just to climb out of the hole. So our judgement of whether Dooley can succeed in the SEC should be against the year two performances of other SEC coaches. I'll list a few, for reference:

*Tommy Tuberville (Auburn): 9-2, SEC West champions. Two wins over teams ranked at the time (#19 Ole Miss, #14 Georgia). One win over teams in the final top 25 (#20 Georgia)

*Nick Saban (LSU): 8-3, SEC West champions. 10-3 including postseason. SEC champions. Four wins over teams ranked at the time (#24 Arkansas, #25 Auburn, #2 Tennessee, #7 Illinois). Two wins over teams ranked in the final poll (#4 Tennessee, #12 Illinois)

*Mark Richt (Georgia): 11-1, SEC East champions. 13-1 including postseason. SEC Champions. Five wins over teams ranked at the time (#22 Alabama, #10 Tennessee, #24 Auburn, #22 Arkansas, #16 Florida State). Three wins over teams ranked in the final poll (#11 Alabama, #14 Auburn, #21 Florida State)

*Ron Zook (Florida). 8-4. Three wins over teams ranked at the time (#6 LSU, #11 Arkansas, #4 Georgia). Two wins over teams in the final top ten (#7 Georgia, national champion LSU). Fired a year later.

*Nick Saban (Alabama). 12-0. SEC West champions. Three wins over teams ranked at the time (#9 Clemson, #3 Georgia, #15 LSU). One win over team in the final top 25 (#13 Georgia).

*Gene Chizik (Auburn). 12-0. SEC West champions. 14-0 including postseason. SEC champions, national champions. Six wins over teams ranked at the time (#12 South Carolina, #12 Arkansas, #6 LSU, #9 Alabama, #18 South Carolina, #2 Oregon). Seven wins over teams ranked in the final poll (#22 South Carolina x2, #12 Arkansas, #8 LSU, #10 Alabama, #15 Mississippi State, #Oregon).

Undervalued post IMO. Interesting to see the performance from our SEC peers with new coaches in 2nd year. One thing is certain - Dooley will have ample opportunity to get wins over ranked teams in the coming weeks; in fact he'll have to beat some in order to reach 8. I guess we'll see if he can finally get that elusive first win over a ranked opponent.

To round out the list of current SEC head coaches with two years or more in the SEC in their second year:

Mullen (MSU): 9-4
Spurrier (USC) 8-5
Phillips (UK) 5-7
Miles (LSU) 11-2

Other recent SEC coaches in their 2nd year:

Petrino (Ark) 8-5
Brooks (UK) 2-9
Nutt (Ark) 8-4 (OM) 9-4
Johnson (VU) 2-10
Meyer (UF) 13-1

If you drop perennial cellar dwellers UK and VU, looks like around 8 wins is reasonable (minimum) for a coach in their 2nd year.

I said before the this season started that I was ready for some answers on how CDD would do, no more excuses. I was really hoping for a strong showing. It's still possible, a lot of games left (tough games though).

Honestly, I'm a little uncomfortable thinking we should be happy with comparisons to Arkansas, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and South Carolina. None of those programs have near the recruiting cachet of Tennessee, and none had been particularly successful before those coaches took over. That's why I made comparisons to coaches at Auburn, Florida, LSU, Georgia, and Alabama.

That said, I think the evidence is fairly clear that 8 wins is the minimum standard, whether you're looking at the conference as a whole or just those top five teams. If you're looking at just the high-level SEC teams, the standard is either get 9+ regular season wins or get 8 with a win over a top ten team.

Kiffin in his Year 0 had a better year than any of Dooley's 3 seasons. Kiffin did all that with a head case for QB, two walk-ons on the OL, etc etc etc.

:unsure:This week will tell me about Dooley i have been backing him from the start starting to wonder if i was wrong.

The minute I heard Dooley throw out that lame excuse, I knew he would never cut it in the SEC. It was a pansy excuse, and not surprisingly his teams play like pansies.
